The absolute goat - goalscoring machine

Every extra year for an athlete at this age is like five. It’s going to be even more difficult for him to keep up. And, I think, it simply would be the right thing for him to do — retire after his current contract ends next year.

He will have accomplished everything by then. There will be nothing else to play for.

What if he actually enjoys playing hockey and wants to play? ;P

Ovi is now Marc-Andre Fleury goals away from breaking Gretzky’s record.

Gretzky played in 1487 games to score 894. OV is 866 at 1443 games. It's not completely out of the realm that OV scores another 28 goals in his next 44 games! That would be a .63 pace. OV's 13 in 17 so far, has him at a .76 goals per game pace!

I keep seeing this, so it needs a minor correction.

Gretzky scored his 894th goal in his 1479th game. He went without a goal in the final 8 games of his career. Ovechkin will need 28 goals within his next 35 games to get to 894 faster.

I guess for what it’s worth, Gretzky scored his 866th goal in his 1346th game.

Ovechkin will of course default to quickest to 895+ by virtue of owning the record.

I'm basing this number off of Ovechkin's history, not the raw number.

this is a really really REALLY misguided way to measure it. That's the nicest way i can put it.

The goals Ovechkin scored 20 years ago have no bearing on what he's going to do this season.

Look at his output this season, or go back however far you want last season, but pretending Ovechkin of 15-20 years ago has anything to do with what he's doing now is just garbage data.

We can compare what he did last year with what he did 20 years ago.

The number does have some spread though. The mean is to expect 52 goals but it can anywhere be between 38 and 69 goals.

didnt his

didnt his dad die last fall, too? he might not have been focused/too much drinking
Could be. I listened to a Russian podcast he was a guest on. They asked him about last fall's subpar performance. From what I could gather he chalked it up to change of stick and fatigue of some sorts — new year's rest was needed and facilitated a well-timed reset. I don't think the passing of his father was mentioned but I'd imagine much of said fatigue might've still stemmed from the demise (he died in February 2023).

One peculiar nugget was that Ovi is apparently a huge fan/friend of Alex Semin. The hosts had a sorts of "who would you rather" game and Ovi took Semin over nearly all of his teammates and past Russian greats (I think at least Kuzy, Varlamov, Bure, Fedorov and Malkin were mentioned) only changed once Ferisov came up.

He has 36 goals in his last 53 games.

Over that span he has the second most goals in the league with Kaprizov leading the way at 39.

Hmm. Good question. Then he might as well play until he is 50 if he keeps loving the game :) We’ll find out pretty soon what he decides. Time flies.

The funny thing is Howe's 1968-1969 season is actually his highest scoring season and the only NHL season in which he had over 100 points.

I guess that illustrates the flaw in looking at raw statistics without any context. By then, he was old by NHL standards, but schedule length and scoring across the League were increasing.
NHL was a beer league and had just gone from 6 teams to 12 massively diluting the already very limited talent. Not a surprise scoring went up dramatically.

What Ovechkin is doing right now is way more impressive.
