my speculation, and thats all it is, is that Ovie spent a lot of time out of shape as he seems like he likes to party. He seemed to get better (not prime level, but better than 2011-2016ish) after his marriage. Perhaps walking the line for his lady.

I dunno, but this has been truly awesome to watch.

In my lifetime there has not been a scorer who held a level this high for anywhere close to this long or this healthy. And his peak was as good as anyone’s, too.

Everyone else on most of these great statistical lists (@Hockey Outsider is the Man) is from the 70s, 80s. Always been the case, and his lists help to contextualize.

I would give a nod to Bobby Hull, who may have been close to equal to Ovie for true top level longevity, but spent 5 good years in the WHA.

Anyways, i will enjoy this ride. Going to be great when he passes Howe.. and then hopefully he keeps up a 35-40 goal/year pace so it doesnt take too long to reach #1.

eg his friend Sid only had one such season in last 8 years, since he was a 27 yrs old Kid (he could get another one this season still)

If Ovie had never recorded an assist in the NHL, his goals alone would still rank him 190th in points. 1 ahead of Pavel Bure (779) and 1 behind Alexei Yashin (781).

Losing in the 2010 Olympics played a role, as well. Ovie took it pretty hard. He really, really wants to win an Olympic gold to honour his mother.

GMGM played a part. Dumpster diving at the trade deadline and using cardboard cutouts on D kept the Caps from getting over the playoff hump and that had to wear on Ovie after a while. That feeling that your incompetent GM does not have your back.

Getting married and having a son certainly played a role, as well. He wants his son to see him play at a high level and I think it's extra motivating for him.

I think a string of bad coaches played a part. Hunter and Oates were not good coaches. Bruce was good but panicked after the playoff loss to Montreal and went away from what was working.

GMGM played a part. Dumpster diving at the trade deadline and using cardboard cutouts on D kept the Caps from getting over the playoff hump and that had to wear on Ovie after a while. That feeling that your incompetent GM does not have your back.

Getting married and having a son certainly played a role, as well. He wants his son to see him play at a high level and I think it's extra motivating for him.

Yeah, cumulative effect, suspensions too - league was on his back and disrupting his style of play.
Personal wellbeing is important, once he became family man - it stabilized him

I never understand why people say OV had a "down" year in 10/11. Forget things like Boudreau changing the system, speculating on his fitness, etc. The most obvious thing that people ignore is his sh% that season was 8.7%, the only season of his career he shot less than 10.5%. Through his first 5 seasons his sh% was 12.5%. If he had some puck luck that season and shoots say 12%, that's 44 goals (3rd in the league), 53 assists (6th) and 97pts (4th) and a way higher hart finish (probably top 5). The only "down" year he had was 11/12 but it's obvious that was a complete anomaly with the Hunter circus.

There’s nothing light about this in my view. You made a very important point. This is actually huge for the league. Ovi’s goal record chase increases interest in the sport and drives the revenue up.

I think he had a 96.5 PDO that season, IIRC. Definitely didn't get the bounces that year.

That was his 33 goal 69 point season where all the haters figured Ovie was washed up. His hands and wrists took a tremendous beating.

I think they finally started cracking down on slashing after that season, thankfully.

Scoring has been trending up so it is not impossible.

Consider if he scores 4 more goals this year for 784. Seasons of 45, 40, 40, 35 would add 160 goals. He'd be at 944 goals. Add 2-3 seasons in his early fourties to score another 56.

Difficult but if he stays healthy and is motivated to do it then he could do it.

The recorded are hailing every day. I saw sid got a impressive consistency record which I actually find amazing but looking back on this era in twenty years we will remember ovechkin. Everybody know goals are more important and this is why most of you have makar as the Norris favorite as suddenly goals became more important than assists in this particular case. Not the same as sids valuable secondary assists that 'many times is the sole reason for the goal' or how was it?

Agreed 100% it was a variety of reasons.
As a side note: with GMGM I was so glad we beat them in the finals. All those years with "we like our team" and half ass defenses really wasted Ovi's prime.
