Well the "pettiness" is part of the game - that's on him for not getting 1 more goal earlier :) . Definitely he had a clear chance in 2019-20, and it would have been cool to see the full 2012-13 season.

The man's not stopping though. Age 36 and still top 5 in goals is crazy.
And if I recall correctly, he missed a breakaway late in the third.

Now if Ovechkin can only do what Selanne did from here on out he would finish his career like this:
Ovechkin age 37: sits out 56 games because isn't motivated to play hockey after winning the cup, scores only 12 goals= 790 career goals
Ovechkin age 38: Scores 27 goals while missing 17 games with a leg injury= 817 career goals
Ovechkin age 39: Scores 27 goals while missing 28 games because of a hand injury and broken jaw= 844 career goals
Ovechkin age 40: Scores 31 goals while missing 9 games with a nagging hip injury= 875 career goals
Ovechkin age 41: Comes back for one more year, plays all 82 games while scoring 26 goals= Breaks Gretzky's record and sets a new record with 901 career goals
Ovechkin age 42: Ovechkin's wheels fall off in another lockout season were he manages to score only 12 goals= 913 career goals
Ovechkin age 43: Comes back for one more season but is disrespected by the capitals and is limited to only 64 games and minimal icetime. Scores only 9 more goals before retiring= ends his career with 922 career goals.

I think at this point the goals will come, the only question is how ugly it will get in terms of hurting his team in the end.

His hot start aside he isn't a positive player at ES anymore and that isn't going to get any better with age.

This season alone he has since Jan 1st a line of 41-24-13-37 (minus 15) and that minus partially hides the ENG and he is already playing 75% offensive zones starts at ES.

At some point the race for Gretzky's record is going to hurt even more than it does right now.

As Jbwest31 pointed out, you are really going to say "hey, forget the first half of the season and then.."

In context, Before Jan 1st Ovie had 33 gp 23+26=49, +21. Thats not just a hot start, thats Hart level of "almost half season". Its not a suprise 36 year old cant keep up with that for 82 games as the wear and tear creeps in, but that doesnt mean he is somekind of liability in context of whole scretch of 82 games.

There is alot of games where he is just unstoppable. Then he has games where he is meh, and his only contribution is his shot and that he takes the eyes of the enemy on him so others can excel. Thats likely going to continue next year. Id say even the "downside" is helpful for the team, its just up for the rest of the bunch to take the advantage they are given. The extra space and time for his linemates, and the easier competition for the other lines.

And EN should not be kept against him. Its not just "record hunting in expense of the team". Those goals have helped the team to close out games in a way that no other player has been capable of doing this year. From his own team, or any other. He has been against how many, one or two, goals on that situation for the whole season. His record on ice for that situation is crazy good, there is a reason his coach uses him.

Ovechkin still has over 200 games to play before he's played as many games as Gretyzky did. And he needs 117 goals in order to break the record. I don't know how sad it will be if Ovechkin manages to not only break Gretzky's goal record, but break Gretzky's goal record in less games played than Gretzky!

Sad? Are you kidding? It would be freaking awesome! It would constitute another definitive argument for Ovechkin’s claim as the greatest goalscorer of all time.

He seems to have a lot left in the tank. After a crazy good start - he cooled off a ton, but still seems he will find a way to score 50.

If he truly has a lot left in the tank because he was saving energy, this could bode well for Capitals playoff run.
