The Capitals have had a dominant powerplay Ovevchkin's whole career, they go one year with a bad one and the "clear denominator" is it's Ovechkin's fault. Ok then.. your bias is showing.

How do previous years have any bearing on how the Capitals’ choice to hold an aging and slow Ovechkin out for the entirety of every powerplay so that fanboys can get all hot and bothered when 1/20 one-timers go in has hurt their conversion rate this year?

The Capitals have one of the worst power plays in the league. I would suggest the clear denominator is how Ovechkin frequently plays the full two minutes and is a complete non-factor in terms of zone entries and puck recoveries, likely moving less than 25 m in the aforementioned two minutes.

Hateboy like you didn't know probably that most of PP goals are scored with 1st unit. Ovy's playing 2 min changes almost nothing.

Well if Dominance actually watched the Capitals games he would know that Ovechkin regularly skates all the way back to his own goal line along with a D man to retrieve the puck and carry it back up ice on the power plays. He rarely attempts to get it into the O-zone but
that's not his thing anyway. He will also swap positions with the point man along the blue line.

So the ongoing (years of) comments about how he just stands in one spot and one-times it are total BS.

It’s the placement I find most amazing- Tage Thompson has a rocket and has been occupying the same office, but he never seems to pick his spots with the lethal accuracy Ovi does. It’s not like he goes short side every time either- he’ll go five hole, under the outer arm, far side. I’m not even sure Ovi knows how he does it, but he just seems to have an instinctive sense for where the hole will be on any given cross crease slide from a goalie.

Honestly I would be shocked if Ovechkin is actually picking corners. I think the only one he really has down is short side. But the difference between OV and others is how frequently he hits the net. And with his shot that’s all he needs.

I don’t think he’s picking corners, and he does go short side more than most other spots, but to me it’s like he knows a goalie’s dimensions, where he’ll be based on timing, and he just kinda aims appropriately with those factors in mind. I don’t even think you can consciously do it, maybe it’s just a muscle memory thing after all these years, but he just seems to find the holes again and again whereas a lot of dudes might just blast it into the logo or the pads.

From over a decade of watching Ovechkin do this, he just seems to look at how the goalie is coming across. If the goalie is late, he'll go short side. When the goalie overcommits, that's when he goes far side or 5 hole. When the goalie plays it well, that's when he'll put it in a hard place to reach, over the goalie's shoulder and right under the crossbar.

Keep fighting the good fight… always complain about Ovechkins PP time, ignoring the usage completely.

If only the Caps put out Lars Eller for 40 seconds, they’d so so much better.

You consistently ignore that Ovechkin is the only player in the league that FORCES a PK defender to either shadow him and allow a 4-on-3, or allow the best PP slapper to run wild.

You cannot apply the same logic and strategy of other elite players to Ovechkin (when talking the powerplay). It’s as simple as that.

Ovechkin can crack top10 in career points by the end of 2023/24. He is about 200 points away and has 25 games to go this season. 87-point pace will get him there - probably a bit too optimistic for a 37-year-old, but still.

I have watched a half dozen Capital games this year and the term regularly is being used very liberally here by you and others.

His PP TOI and reliance on others to drive play retrieve puck and his lack of imagination or creativity in the offensive zone is pretty evident.

He's 36 so it's not a big deal in one sense but for the team to cater and center their offense around what once was instead of what is was clearly called out.

He had a great start to the season but he basically is what he has been for almost 10 years now, a high volume shooter who gets prime offensive zone starts and PP TOI and doesn't really do a heck of alot else out there.

He is going to get his goals for sure but at some point the return (driving for the record) is going to become a larger problem.
