Gretzky scored 583 in the same amount of time.No O.V. will not catch Gretzky.

This. He's already ~150 goals behind. Ovechkin has to make that amount up AND continue to produce at a high level.

It's possible I guess....but not probable no matter how you look at it.

I'm still hung up on the guy who said 600 is unlikely. Like at some point your level of hatred overshadows any rational thought about that player. Kind of sad. 20 years from now you'll look back and be like "Wow. That guy was an amazing talent."

Yea its easy, he needs 15 goals a year for the next 10 years to get to 600 or 30/year in the next 5. Not hard numbers for him considering his lowest total ever is 32, lockout year included.

Crosby will always be better....and by a margin

Was it necessary to bring him up in an Ovechkin discussion? I guess people are mad Ovy is once again being recognized for his talent.

Certain people have never forgiven OV for stealing the spotlight from Crosby the first few years they were in the league. Apparently they never will.

He wasn't talking about assists. Learn to read.
Looks like you completely missed the point. It is FAR easier to score 86 goals if you are only scoring 45 assists compared to 120 assists. Hull was COMPLETELY focussed on goal scoring that year. Gretzky scored almost THREE times as many assists as Hull did, and still scored more goals than him anyway! Imagine if Gretz had focussed as much effort as Hull did on scoring goals?! How many would Gretz have scored had he only had 45 assists? 130 goals? 150 goals? Just to put things into perspective...

Agreed, and they can't seem to handle that he's kinda pushing his way back into the best of the world discussion.

The amazing thing about Gretzky was that he scored all of those goals while still being the best play-maker in history. Ovechkin is one of the best goal scorers ever, but it's amazing to think what Gretzky's goal totals could have been if he was a shoot first player.

It is also somewhat ponderous that the last 4 years of his career, where he won a Hart and 2 Richards, is widely regarded by these same folks as a "decline".

And we're talking one category. Ovi is less than 25% of the way to his point total - assist numbers are similar. I'd say Ovi is way less than 'halfway to Gretzky'

500 goals? Sure
600 goals? Very likely
700 goals? Starting to get into 50/50 territory

Anything more than that then it'd depend on how he continues as he declines as a player.

Its about how he's halfway to Gretzkys goal total, not points. Nobody is coming close to his point total.

Thats the best part. Because he hasn't scored 100 points in a while he somehow is declining even though he's scored plenty of goals and won a few trophies since.

Well, he isn't as good as in 2005-10. That's a fact.

Yes but people act like he's taken a Hetaley/Lecavalier-esque nosedive. He's still a very good player who can score 30 goals like its nothing, although he usually scores 40 or 50.

Plus, like WarriorofTime said league scoring has declined.

As of right now Ovechkin has scored 449 goals. He needs to score Another 446 to break the record. That means he's already scored 3 more goals in the NHL than he needs to score from here on out.

And he's got 13 and a ½ seasons left in him so I think he might just do it. He's basically got that 4 and a ½ season of extra hockey so he can take a big decline in production too...

He's 29 and plays physical. I think they were saying tonight he's 6th leaguewide in hits.I doubt he can keep that up 10 more years, but prove me wrong.

He's never going to reach Lemieux status, much less Gretzky. Prime Lemieux was scoring at a rate of about one goal per game. That's what Ovechkin would need to do to reach Lemieux status but Ovechkin is already past his prime. If he gets 700 it will be quite the accomplishment but he's no Lemieux.

Ovechkin is currently proving right now he is obviously not past his prime...

Lemieux could score 40 goals in this league though. If it wasn't for his back problems. And he's almost 50 years old.

The point is, wait for it to happen before you compare it to one of if not the best goal scorer ever.
