Ovechkin and Crosby reached the 1,400 point milestone four days apart. They now rank 21st and 22nd all-time in scoring.

Here's a chart showing the daily progression of their career point totals from the start of their careers:

Here's a table showing the leads, day by day (greater than zero means Ovechkin is in the lead):

I will attempt to put together a table that looks at this by game (rather than on a daily basis).

NOTE - based on my past experience when posting these tables, I'll make this disclaimer. This is just statistical trivia. It's not intended to be an argument for or against either player. If you think these charts are disparaging to your favourite player, get some fresh air.

Never even thought to compare the two.

These are awesome graphs.

This website should do an in depth debate of who is better between the two.

I also found it surprising that nobody has compared these two players over the past 16 years. That seems like the type of thing someone on HFBoards would have written about at some point since 2005. I'm glad to blaze a new trail wherever I can!

Here are the same charts, looking at it by game rather than by calendar date. I think this is accurate but let me know if anything looks off:

I knew Crosby would be ahead after about 400 games, but I thought it would be closer.

It's around the 400 game mark that Crosby hit his peak, while Ovi was in his down years of 10-11 and 11-12. So that makes sense.

Is the gap closing around the 600 game mark the 14 15 and 15 16 seasons? Very interesting 100ish game stretch.

Exactly, Ovechkin had his two-year slump in 2011 and 2012 (he was still 5th in goals and 8th in points). That corresponds to around game 400, which is when Crosby started pulling away.

Is the gap closing around the 600 game mark the 14 15 and 15 16 seasons? Very interesting 100ish game stretch.

After 590 games, Crosby was ahead by 103 points (819-716). By game 657, Ovechkin cut the lead to 74 points (872-798), which is the closest it would be at any point for the rest of their careers.

That period corresponds to mid January 2015 to mid December 2015 for Crosby (53 points in 67 games), and early April 2013 to late February 2014 for Ovechkin (82 points in 67 games). I think this was the period where Crosby was struggling under coach Mike Johnson, and Ovechkin had a red-hot finish to the 2013 season and a really good start to 2014 (basically up to the Olympic break).

And the graph comments grow, now people will get triggered no doubt eh?:sarcasm:

It's amazing how the gap has stayed so close over the years. Are there any another star players that came into the league at the same time and were neck and neck in points for so long?

Crosby had 3 leads of 33 points? Whoa. 33+33 = 66. 33 can also be written 3 and 3. 3+3 = 6. When you add them up you get 666. A triangle has three sides...

Conclusion:
