Ovechkin and Crosby are STILL most selling jerseys

Of course they are. The NHL marketed them like crazy, and gave them every opportunity and advantage, so that the NHL and struggling NHL franchises survived the lockout. Now there's no imminent threat to the business and the best players in the world are on Canadian teams, so the NHL is back to not caring and doing a horrible job promoting the sport.

Frankly, it seems to me Jack Hughes is becoming the new face of the league - his jerseys sell well, he’s appearing in a lot of ads and he’s got somewhat promotable personality.

Alex Ovechkin is the top selling NHL jersey for the 2022-23 NHL season. The Boston Bruins were the top selling team jersey.

McDavid has had poor playoff success.
But even then its strange.
His persona is also very shut. Words just crawling out if his mouth, even I though find his personality a bit more interresting than Sid.
Sid is all about mediatrained. Connor is more himself.
 
There's definitely a marketing problem.
There's also a cultural problem where any player with a personality get labeled as having character issues. I've even seen fans get angry over cellies.

In the UFC we see mediocre fighters like Paddy Pimblett get a ton of publicity just by having a personality, but in the NHL there's nothing more painful than listening to interviews with media trained players giving their rehearsed speeches about getting pucks in deep.

We need more players like Ovi and Subban. Hope Isaac Howard pans out.

Crosby's loud on the bench and constantly arguing with the refs and opponents any chance he gets. Whether good or bad, he gets a lot of attention from everyone on the ice including the camera. McDavid just stands there with his mouth open

It all started with Don cherry hating over Ovie celebrating.
It wasnt to much. I get Cherry doesnt want soccer egoistic- its all about me - cellies, but it did hurt more than it helped. Now no one doesnt even dare to celebrate.

When Crosby went to Pittsburgh, a boat load of Canadians became Penguins fans.

No such phenomena seems to be happening for McDavid/Oilers.

In the end, Cherry got what he wanted. Sleeping, boring emotionless charachters. McDavid and Crosby is sooo entertaining... right?

Ovie is the shit. I bet Ovie got more people into hockey than those two zombies.

Crosby sells Jerseys in Pittsburgh and Canada (huge portion of maritimers are now Pitt fans because of him especially kids). I'd argue it's likely similar for Russians as well with Ovechkin
 
The Rivalry between Ovi and Sid came on naturally and so strong. They built a narrative that was compelling.

No rookie has broken a 100 since.
That started the rivalry.

Season 4
The meet in the Playoffs and having the dueling hat tricks game and a seven game series.

The first four years of their career they dominate the league and built a story that has last for 17 years.

Nothing comes close to that and it will be really hard to match that ever again.

Stories sell Merchandise better than just on ice play.

I've lived in USA most of my life. Different cities. The main canadian cities Americans knew/know were Toronto and Vancouver. Honestly, I doubt most know Edmonton exist.

McDavid's personality. Very boring interviews and doesn't really stand out off the ice. Patrick Mahomes is not a great interview. And he plays in a small market. But he sells jerseys because Football is king. Hockey is not. Lack of promotion by the NHL can be tied in too. How often is ESPN/TNT airing non Edmonton playoff games? Rarely.

Edmonton hasn't had great success. If they won three straight cups, Americans would likely know who McDavid is. More than the few that do at least.

A few reasons I believe McDavid is not top five.

McDavid hasn't had that Ovechkin type competitor either. Speaking of, Ovechkin is charismatic and funny. No matter what, you will get an interesting soundbite.

Canadians in general are quite unhappy with the state the Jersey quality.
We are simply not buying the crappy Adidas and Fanatics design anymore.

Reebok used to do great quality, now you pay 300$ for a cheap knock off, with badly sewed on ''official'' tag
Matthews and McDavid where 1st and third in 2018, right after Adidas took over and started ruining it with the reverse retro non sense
