It's just great marketing. If you're a fan of New Jersey, every time you hear your team's name you hear new jersey and want to go out and get yourself a new New Jersey jersey .Hughes is pretty surprising actually.
Never heard of this fella, how many goals he scored in the NHL?You guys are misspelling Bedard. Who the hell is McDavid?
Just means that you are a 1%er dude.I know who Connor McDavid is and I live in the U.S.
McDavid has had poor playoff success.I think it’s fair to say that NHL has an issue promoting the “new” faces of the league.
Year in and year out, Sid and Ovie continue to be the most popular players and they are still the true face of the league. The two household names casual and non hockey fans know.
Shockingly, Connor McDavid is not even top 5 in jersey sales. I get Edmonton might not be the most popular team, but how in the world NHL does nothing to promote the best player of this generation ?
Frankly, it seems to me Jack Hughes is becoming the new face of the league - his jerseys sell well, he’s appearing in a lot of ads and he’s got somewhat promotable personality.
Highest selling NHL jersey for the 2022-2023 season
Alex Ovechkin is the top selling NHL jersey for the 2022-23 NHL season. The Boston Bruins were the top selling team jersey.www.nhltraderumor.com
McDavid has had poor playoff success.
But even then its strange.
His persona is also very shut. Words just crawling out if his mouth, even I though find his personality a bit more interresting than Sid.
Sid is all about mediatrained. Connor is more himself.
It all started with Don cherry hating over Ovie celebrating. There's definitely a marketing problem.
There's also a cultural problem where any player with a personality get labeled as having character issues. I've even seen fans get angry over cellies.
In the UFC we see mediocre fighters like Paddy Pimblett get a ton of publicity just by having a personality, but in the NHL there's nothing more painful than listening to interviews with media trained players giving their rehearsed speeches about getting pucks in deep.
We need more players like Ovi and Subban. Hope Isaac Howard pans out.
It all started with Don cherry hating over Ovie celebrating.
It wasnt to much. I get Cherry doesnt want soccer egoistic- its all about me - cellies, but it did hurt more than it helped. Now no one doesnt even dare to celebrate.
Oh yea I even forgot about that. The classic example I always think of is Yakupov.
I don't care if he was a bust, let the man enjoy scoring goals.
McDavid hasn't had that Ovechkin type competitor either. Speaking of, Ovechkin is charismatic and funny. No matter what, you will get an interesting soundbite. The Rivalry between Ovi and Sid came on naturally and so strong. They built a narrative that was compelling.
Season Rookie Season 2005-2006
Sid 102 pts
Ovi 106 pts
No rookie has broken a 100 since.
That started the rivalry.
Season 2
Sid Wins MVP
Season 3
Ovi Wins MVP
Season 4
The meet in the Playoffs and having the dueling hat tricks game and a seven game series.
The first four years of their career they dominate the league and built a story that has last for 17 years.
Nothing comes close to that and it will be really hard to match that ever again.
Stories sell Merchandise better than just on ice play.
NHL keeps trotting out Pittsburgh, Washington, and Chicago on prime time. Two of those teams are facing very long rebuilds soon. The other was awful this year. NHL has never been good at advertising it's product.I doubt people know what an Edmonton or a Connor McDavid is in the states
