It was a dumb decision from the start and seems like a dumb decision to keep it on but it is what they want so no point worrying about it now.

So a difference of 20 dollars is what made the decision for you?

Seems like a pretty small price to pay to see an event like this.

Ill put it this way - Im single and dont have kids, so if I am going to a game, I need to find a friend to bring along. Now I know enough hockey guys, but then when you subtract people working, people who have plans already for a Friday night, people who dont care about the WJC, or people who dont like outdoor games, its a much tougher thing to make work.

In the end, the logistics are tough enough that when you finally make a plan, the price matters, even if it is a small sum.

Thats what I mean. The opportunity cost is A LOT higher/.

Apparently the ice conditions are bad. How? I thought it was cold in Buffalo right now, so how could the ice possibly be this bad?

The ice is bad when it gets really cold because the ice hardens and chips easily.

I do think its unfair to players who aren't even getting paid to play in this game (at least NHL players get a sizable paycheck, and the outdoor games contribute to the cap). I hope the game comes off without a hitch, and no player suffers an injury due to the bad ice.

From what I remember from when Calgary hosted really cold temperatures are almost as bad as warm (within reason of Buffalo in January) temperatures because as mentioned above the way the ice freezes doesn't make for quality hockey playing ice.

What was more amazing -- the high ticket prices, or sitting a lot farther away from the ice so the players are tiny specks and you cannot see the puck?

I went to a couple outdoor games here at Comerica Park (an Ontario Hockey League doubleheader the year the Wings and Leafs played at Michigan Stadium), and now that it's off my bucket list I never want to go to another one.
An OHL outdoor is not even close to an NHL game or the best junior players in the USA and Canada facing off.

They only put 47,000 tickets on sale for the game, even though the stadium holds 71k. They've sold roughly 90% of the 47k.

Its absolute asinine how they planned this. If they had made tickets cheap (meaning like a range of 15-50) they could have sold out the whole arena.
I was thinking of driving down (taking a day off work) if I could get tickets for like $20.

Problem was when I had to make a decision whether to take the day off or not, they were closer to double that. Once you factor in gas money, time and the fact that its Christmas, it made almost no sense.

Face value on tickets is anywhere from $20-$75 for prelim games and medal games are $35-100. Of course if you wanted to buy an entire package of tickets, then yes, it's expensive.

However, you can easily goto a prelim game with another person, have a couple beers ($9/each), parking ($15) and it'd still only cost you $73 USD if you went with the cheapest tickets. Also, why is everyone acting like Toronto is 5hrs from Buffalo? Is it the "Toronto bubble" that has people thinking this way. You can get from city hall in Toronto to the arena in Buffalo in just under 2hrs...and gas roundtrip might cost you a whole $20.

your timings are 100% accurate.

the $20 bucks in gas....maybe if your running an electric hybrid, lol.

It's what, 400km round trip? (downtown Toronto to Buffalo and back)

edit: you mean gas cost "per person" likely. So $40 total. That is likely closer.

..WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING
THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING...

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow possible. Travel may be very
difficult at times. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet are
possible in the most persistent lake snows.

from the national weather service in buffalo

now what do they do?

I wonder what this game will look in 4k since it's outside. watching the game between the US and Slovakia looks breathtaking in 4k.

And you don't get anything worth watching either.

Do you really think a regular season NHL game is worth the inflated ticket price you are charged to sit far away from the ice where you can barely see what's going on? And many of the games turn out to be boring, such as the recent Ottawa - Montreal game. That game wasn't worth watching, either.

I'm excited for this game, but I wonder how much the skill is gonna be limited by the ice conditions.

Considerably. They’re cash grabs that start to resemble exhibition games, throw in poor ice issues and you’ll have guys playing to not get injured.

Lots of complaints in the GDT, guess you wouldn't enjoy a game of bandy very much . Seriously speaking this is pretty ridiculous though.

What a joke to be honest. Glad they were even when the conditions got better, but it was a stupid idea to begin with.
