Marner will become the Leafs best all around player as quickly as this year. Hard not to like him.

Leafs are good for now, but man once those injured come back they will have to shed some salary no? I think next year they only have 1 defenseman signed too.

To be fair to Marner, it's true the Leafs are not respecting him as much. By virtue of him being a winger and less of a goal scorer (26G is nothing to sneeze at), there was never any intention of treating Marner like Matthews who is a center and goal scorer. It's like they never considered that he might not see things their way after he lead the team in points two seasons in a row. People can say, "but Matthews was injured", yet isn't that again not respecting him? Dismissing his contributions with the absolute certainty that Matthews has always been better even while injured for weeks?

It isn't surprising to me that elite players sometimes want to be treated as "the guy". Especially a guy who approached 100 pts. Unfortunately for Marner, that belongs to Tavares and Matthews in spite of his significant contributions to the team.
Last one to the party.

Tavares, Matthews, Nylander. all signed before Marner.

Cap league.

They also gave the moon to Tavares.
Tavares will always average his point a game. Winning team , losing team, whatever.

But he is not and never has been in the elite tier of Sid, Malkin, OV, Kane, MacD,

When Babs had him on team Canada he was on the fourth line, and not on powerplay.

Good centerman. But not a superstar. Dubas paid him as if he he was getting Sid Crosby.

Tavares contract was a little different though, they were bidding on a ufa and all but yes I guess it did affect the situation they are in now. Taking a discount to keep the core together only works in everybody does it.
Usually happens when the team has won a cup or two and want to keep it going.

Teams that have not won a round in 15 years have little chance of getting players to take a home town discount.

I kind of admire when players handle it the way Guentzal did. Leads play offs in goal scoring for two years. Scored 40 in regular season. Told his agent he wanted a deal done quickly and quietly. Not to drag it out. Think he signed for 6 mill a year.

With their LTIR players i think they will be fine.

That will definitely help. And of course sending a few guys to the minors will also help bring the cap down for them. But even at that, they'd be so tight against the cap that you'd think they'd move some guys out to create more of a cushion.

Because even with Horton and Clarkson on LTIR, they're still over the cap. And I don't know exactly what Hyman and Dermott's injuries are, but they won't be out for long, I imagine. So even if they place them on LTIR to create room (and I don't know if placing someone on LTIR requires them to be out for at least a minimum length of time), they'll be back eventually. And that could put them over the cap again.

So trades must be made.

Just happy the Marner contract saga is finally over with. Almost 40.5 million now tied up in 4 forwards is quite top heavy so we'll see how that works out for the Leafs going forward.

I see that some Leaf fans are back to being their usual cocky and arrogant selves on the mainboard again tonight.. A complete 180 after the outrage from the past couple of days from some of them regarding Marner and his "greediness".

Congrats on your new contract Mitch.

40% of the cap are on Matthews, Tavares, and Marner. No question these are elite players. But damn that is a lot of your cap on three players.

They are all very elite players, not doubt…..but imagine, here it's a crime that we have ONE player at 1o.5M who are also in the elite category.
