His weird reffing seems to align with Bettman’s priorities of advantaging US teams with small fanbases. It certainly doesn’t lead to watchable hockey.

I remember doing a compilation about 15 years ago that spanned between 95 and 2010, where I calculated and ranked teams each year and the overall totals for times shorthanded versus powerplays given. For that period, all O6 teams were (total) bottom 10 in PP/SH differential, while NJ, PIT, TB and Car had hugely been favored. The former (NJ) all throughout the period led all teams, while TB, Car and Ana were massively favored the year they won the cup or went to the finals (for Ana). Something around +80 for those seasons, meaning they had one full PP per game more than they were shorthanded, which is massive.

Surprisingly enough, Habs were massively favored for one season only, in the Vigneault years, i think it was 2000-2001, iirc. Around +80, but as soon as Habs became more competitive, they were mostly always bottom 10.

The overall outlook is that O6 teams were oddly all very low, while teams in financial dire straits (NJ, Pitts) and certain expansion teams were massively favored.

As an aside, strangely, Pitts also won the biggest draft lottery of the last quarter century and NJ had advanced the most times by lottery win since the inception of the draft lottery.

Teams in financial trouble seem to become very lucky in this league.

:skeptic: I didn't expect to wake-up to Ratanen being traded to Carolina and Chicago getting a bag of pucks over the trade.
Don't get it from Chicago's perspective. You spend a retention slot and Hall for a 3rd round pick?

I still firmly believe we should listen to offers for our UFA players. It could get wild.

Holy crap. Is Rantanen really asking for 14 million? Would love to have him but not for that much
Anyone who question KH securing our kids for 8 years in the 7-8 millions range doesn't know what he is talking about. Arizona was like a cancer. It's now gone like COVID and the cap will rise. Slaf at 7 millions even if he remains a big 50 points forward will be fine. If he becomes more than that then it's going to be an incredible deal.

Chicago could have held out for a 1st round pick
Don't think you get a 1st for Hall he has slowed down a lot i mean Evans has the same amount of points and imo Evans has a lot more to offer than hall beside points. But Hall with a retention slot should have been at least a 2nd and another lower pick.

So is Rantanen happy or not. Paying for an unhappy Rantanen sounds like a dangerous proposition.
Carolina won't be the only team able to find the money to pay him on his next contract.
Given how much I love The Hurricane I hope he walks after they suck down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Colorado playing Boston right now. Obviously big implications for montreal, but I'm curious to see how Colorado responds on ice to such a mammoth trade. It so strange to see a team in their cup window actually take a step back (on paper) in a trade.

Necas is in the lineup BTW.

For those wondering, it's still scoreless with the shots favoring Colorado 6-1.

They needed a 3rd team to make this happen, Chicago had leverage.

People within the NHL are confused as well  :

Hall was whining about getting moved. He asked for a trade like a month ago, and the GM was like, play better then maybe we could move you.

They just wanted to get rid of him. He's a dump. They actually saved money on the cap with this trade about $2.5m, so I expect they'll try & involve themselves in more deals.
