Out of Town Thread - New Year’s 2025 Edition

It's always funny to see Buffalo make a late-season surge when they're already essentially eliminated and move from picking top 3 to the 8-14 range. Almost every year.

From 2013-2020 they picked 8th overall four times and 7th one more.

I gotta say their moves last summer weren't even bad. Savoie for McLeod got panned but seems like they finally got ahead of the bust curve and got a solid middle sixer.

Watch them pick 8th again.

They're still in 4th overall position. They would have to make up 6 pts to draft 8th. That seems doubtful at this late stage.

Chicago, San Jose & Nashville have been the bottom 3 teams all year with Buffalo & Pittsburgh switching back and forth in #4 & #5 spot. It looked at one time Buffalo might pass Pens for good, but not anymore. Pens have won 4 in a row & have climbed into 8th spot.

Buffalo could probably pass Seattle & Philadelphia to end up 6th OA. They should stay where they are & try and draft Martone.

It's such a tease. They go on a hot run late, gives their fans false hope and makes everyone think they can make a big jump the next season and then next season rolls around and they look bottom 5 again. Gotta feel for Sabres fans, that playoff drought is nuts. Alex Auld was a Hab last time they made it. Hutson was 7 years old

Being offically eliminated with 14 games left is crazy:

Dude... The sharks are a bruuuuutal club. If they didn't have Celebreni, I feel like they don't win a single game this year.

It's wild to think that the sharks were once a power house. It'll take another 3-4 years before they are competitive.
That's what happen when you have a good team and do not care about drafting and development anymore because you have a good team. Pens are going this way too once Crosby, Letang and Malkin retire. Hope we wont fall into this pit but i sure we will again. Already the media and some of our fans are like we don't need kids anymore and we're not even contending so .... our fanbase is already in MOAR vets mode which is crazy imo.

Given they were competitive from the 2005 lockout to ~2020, their day of reckoning was coming. That was a good run. Plus, with Celebrini, Smith, Dickinson, Askarov and potentially one of Schaefer, McKenna, DuPont in the upcoming drafts, they have the potential to build a new powerhouse in the west. I'd be pumped about the future if I was a Sharks fan.

They went like 9-0-1 with like 15 games left one of the last 5 seasons and moved from bottom 5 to like 14th or something. They were like 1 point out of the playoffs with 5 games left then went something like 1-0-4 and missed by a point. Same year Florida went to the finals from 8th seed I think. Both them and the Pens screwed us out of a top 14 pick and I was angry at both teams. Doubt we would have flipped it for Newhook with Benson/Yager/Wood there.

Anyways, don't count them out of doing insane, franchise destroying or delaying things at any point.

But if there's a dman available 1st overall in a generally weak draft, they will be there. Like Power isn't great for a 1st overall, but that entire first round--yeah. When the best forward goes to Dallas late in the first it's not a great draft.

Dahlin is not far off outscoring Brady Tkachuk as a dman. Can't criticize that pick either.

Highest chance to get McDavid and Edmonton swoops in from third with the tenth lottery win. Eichel starts making excuses to leave still on his ELC.

Go for Reinhart over Drai, that's gotta sting.

Manage to miss the top 5 in 2017, Heiskanen, Makar, Pettersson.

Think Caufield is too small in 2019, make the same mistake everyone from 2-14 did except Detroit and Minny.

Anyways, Buffalo will definitely f*** up their pick. They'll get in the range where they'll just miss the guaranteed good player, and pick the guy who really needs a good development path and f*** that up. Like Benson dropped to them and they rushed him into the NHL at 18. They'll turn him into a Paul Byron instead of a potential first liner.

Sucks to see them make the same mistakes 15 years in a row.

This half red half blue design looks too much like a 1990s website. Just give back dark mode.

edit:
Ok dark mode finally reappeared for me on desktop.

Ah, Alex Auld!!! One of the Price's backups during Carey's tenure!!

@amnesiac hey I was about to make a poll but wanted a second opinion from you to see if this would be a good one or not.

“Dan Boyle vs Dennis Wideman : both 25 years old, who do you add on your team?”
