Crazy that the room temperature IQ posters on the main board are defending Reaves there. Clear hit to the head with intent to injure by a worthless player.
To preface: I hate dirty hits and think they ruin the game.

Players are told to forecheck and punish defenders. Reaves took speed and went to blow up the defender. Nurse was completely unaware of the SCUD missile coming his way.

Out of respect for the game and its players: Reaves should've eased up. There is not much more upside in pulverising a d-man (to the point of injury) versus blowing him up and making him hurt. The tangible difference is the targeted player might be pulled out of the game due to injury... but then so could you (the hitter), and so could other players on your team who get targeted in kind. That's why it's disrespectful. You're trying not to hurt the player but to make the player get hurt... that's beyond the bounds of a sport.

Reaves should've let up a bit when he knew he had Nurse. A split-second decision would've changed a devastating "dirty" hit into highlight reel hit anyone could be proud to have as their own.

With that said, is it a filthy hit that aimed for the head? No. It wasn't a drive-by, a slewfoot, a raised shoulder, a flying elbow, etc. Reaves drove into Nurse with maximum force while Nurse was bent over, in the danger zone by the boards, and completely unaware of his impending doom. Terrible lack of awareness from Nurse and a terrible decision to hurt another player from Reaves.

Hits like what Reaves did have to stop. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
You summarized it very well.

How did 46 players get picked before Logan Stankhoven? He is so damn good
Size. Like Hutson.

Dallas struck gold twice that year. They drafted Johnston in the first round (23rd) and Stankoven , second round at 46th. And few years before, Robertson in the second round too. I don’t know if Mavric Bourque will pan out at NHL level, or will remain just an excellent AHL player.

2022 draft falling pretty flat on their faces. Cooley the only guy other than slaf not having a massive slump compared to last season. Guys like mintyukov being replacement level. Poitras indeed was a flash in the pan. Hutson is probably already the best player from the draft.

The idiots running the league don't care about player safety

Bettman & co are only part of the problem. I also blame the players and the NHLPA.

The union and the players are way too complacent about making their $$$ than enforcing anything regarding player safety. Superstars should be vocal and participate in the union. Instead they prefer to cash in their paycheck and let bottom 6 grinders and fringe players be the team's union representative.

It's a double edged sword, though.

The player's union is there to defend both parties, so there's a direct conflict of interest.

The union is there to get players money and make sure the teams don't push them too far with various things (too many practices, not enough days off, etc), so for the union to come out and say "Play A should be suspended longer" is going against what the union is there for.

A longer suspension is less money for the player(s). The union has shown they don't care about ex-NHLers because they're not paying into the union. (Just look at the various players struggling after retirement)

Reaves got 5 because he's a nothing burger player.

McDavid throws a hit like that and I'd be surprised if he gets more than the 5 and a game.

The league needs to realize hits to the head are always going to be there because the game is just too fast.

The league needs to realize players need to protect themselves by getting their head up. Nurse was too focused on the puck and it sounds like no one on his team was telling him to heads up, Reaves is coming.

I posted this on the mainboard, but these two stills are a split second apart. Nurse reaches for the puck, Reaves straightens up to hit him.

Reaves is a useless plug, but he doesn't leave his feet, he doesn't take a bunch of strides into Nurse, he doesn't extend the elbow. Aside from his shoulder catching Nurse's head with the last second change by both it's a bad hit and he gets 5 and a game. Parros, the absolute idiot goes above and gives him 5 because he is who he is.

Thankfully Nurse is fine by the sounds of it and might be in the lineup tomorrow against the Habs.

Then again, players get called for boarding because the opposing player tries to spin last second and gets stapled first face into the boards.

All fair points. On your last point, I remember Marek talking to Friedman on his past radio show about how young players nowadays uses the boarding rule to try to extract a penalty against the other team. It's not just players not protecting themselves, it's them - purposefully - being reckless.
