I really don't know what the Oilers could do. Mcdavid and Draisaitl are actually insanely cheap for what they bring, 25% of the cap. In comparison, 2010 Pens had both their players at 32.6% and repeat at 29%.For all of the issues in Habs land, there is no greater embarrassment in hockey than how mismanaged the Oilers are.
It's actually cringe that they're giving office jobs to McDavid 's friends, what he probably wants is a winning team surrounding him. He's on track to turn into an also -ran of hockey history, closer to Jarome Iginla and Adam Oates than Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.

And to be honest I genuinely don't see how they can build a good team around McDavid and Draisatl, certainly not this year and next. They have bad contracts and a shit farm system.
It's sad, but their best bet is to trade McDavid and Draisatl for futures, tank for two or three years, let the bad contracts run their course, and try to start winning around 2028.
Their offensive depth is also not overpaid at all, Kane, RNH, Hyman holding 18% of the cap is not much. 43% For five players like those should lead to a winning team. Of course the defense is horrible and grossly overpaid, but Id say the Pens weren't too good either.
