would have loved him here.. we really dropped the ball budgetwise not keepign giroux.. i think we had a shot but had 0 money..

I try to think of it in broader terms beyond just that season. The team was a wagon in the regular season, Zito was a newish GM, and we had a still interim coach. I think of those Giroux and Chiarot trades as the cost of learning.
Zito gave that team all it needed to compete and was rewarded with a dud playoffs. But that gave him the information he needed to make a decision on Huber, Weegar, and Bruno plus the justification to move on from them. Without doing those Giroux/Chiarot deals, maybe there's an excuse the team didn't get all the help it could from the management.
So yeah in a vacuum those trades sucked, but we aren't where we are today without those trades. No Tkachuk, no Maurice, no cup run, etc. We're such a different team now and compete hard all the time, but it was a process to get here that I think it started with that crappy playoff.
