It worked before, it will again. Tavares is our second best scorer behind the best scorer in the whole world right now in Auston Matthews. These type of gunz should always, always play in the first unit like the italians say with an accent. That word ALWAYS is emphesized here hard. I'm amazed our fool coaching staff last season didn't play tavares every time the puck dropped... he should be the one taking the faceoff and go on from there. That's the only demand, having the big scorer TAVARES OUR CAPTAIN on the first powerplay. All season long, just like the other great teams do in the league. They don't take bergeron, crosby, mcdavid, Point off there. Never. That's like a noob, chumb fool move do that that there........ manny malhotra. I'm laughing out loud. I heard this guy played our powerplays..... Why? He ain't no powerplay player neither. I looked up and he is still hired as our assistant coach. Whom will play our powerplays this upcoming season? Not this fool I hope? Even I would do a better job with these talented players it seems. That's alarming right thurr sire. And not hard.

The thing is, who's the PP coaching staff? If it's whoever was responsible for the second half of last year's PP, they should be fired regardless. When was the last time we heard who runs this thing? I haven't heard Malholtra's name in a year.
Huge note there sire. You already knew. This is it and our BIGGEST fall thang last season... we had the tools, and didn't even use it. I'm still blown away. Your question is the nuclear of the whole thing. Right at the center of it, this is a huge issue and definitely worth a thread. The whole powerplay coaching staff situation and who did it. Wrong, and who will do it now.

I really, really hope they get their heads out of their asses with the PP this year. Running washed up Thonton and Simmonds with Matthews and Marner was incredibly dumb.

Stack the top unit and let them build the necessary chemistry to succeed.

I used to blame Babcock for the weird PP strategy but it clearly wasn't him - it's Dubas' idea and it's him who tries to keeps trying to make this split PP thing work. It ended up in our PP being a monumental mess the 2nd half of the year.

No drop pass.

Gaining entry is priority.

No fools trick, what we have is gold, no need for fools errand.

Marner as an asset must be adjusted if we're not top 5 in the powerplay.

Tavares plays where he is best suited.

The power play was what killed the Leafs last year. It was so bad after starting off so lethal.

Whoever is running that should have been fired 10 seconds after the first round.

It should be the easiest part of the game for the Leafs to improve on.

I don't care who is on the first PP, and who is on the second. I don't care if the first is stacked, or they are balanced. All I care about, is results, and after the hot start, we were atrocious last year. It actually takes a special coaching skill, to take such talented players, and completely neuter the power play. I agree, that is one area that absolutely needs fixing.

You know that it will be great (and the commentators talking 'who tf shall defend it') for the first 10 weeks, like every season. But then ...

The root of the issue will always be Marner. The main issue with the coaching was not taking him off of the PP. They tried changing everything else (swapping out Rielly, stacking, balancing, etc.) but it all comes down to Marner not being able to shoot, or handle the puck, or make passes... And the problem only compiled on itself because the system was designed for him to have the puck all of the time and occupy a prime spot on the PP.

The good news for this year is that, as long as we can get Liljegren in the mix for the PP, there should be a ton of different looks we can use.

If they really want to fix the PP then Marner and Rielly should be on PP2.

How effective can a PP be when you have not 1 but 2 guys who aren't a threat to score.

Start with Matthews Tavares and Nylander, and go from there.

Really weird conclusion considering the PP was never stacked pre-Dubas, and has been stacked the majority of the time under Dubas.

I'm not so sure that the answer is simply "Marner". He's also been part of the PP when it's been very successful, yet predictable.

Noting, Marner was 7th in the league, in PPP/60 in 2019/20.

The idea that somehow he sucks, when he was fine before, seems, well wrong.

They might be utilizing him wrong, but Marner can't handle the puck or make passes? Really, is that serious?

Manny Malhotra is on the thinnest ice possible right now. If the Leafs PP starts out poorly, he'll be gone for sure.

I’d put Nylander as the half wall because he’s a danger to shoot and Marner isn’t. Matthews is in his usual spot, Marner plays bumper down low and Tavares out front. Rielly or Sandin on the top of the umbrella.

It’s too easy and predictable to know neither Marner or rielly are going to shoot. Putting Nylander who has an excellent shot makes the d move and contest him, and opens up a new lane down low.

Yep. Marner has the 8th highest PP P/60 in the league since he entered the NHL in 2016-2017, and he has excelled with multiple different units. The idea that he's a problem on the PP and needs to be taken off of it is hilariously wrong.

I completely agree. It’s baffling this configuration didn’t get tried last season. In addition to this, the power play needs more movement. They started out doing it, but eventually just became a bunch of guys basically standing in place for 2 mins and that will never work.

You should be doing some hip hop album soon sire. That there is a hit in the makings.

Our captain tavvy will-kill-big this season. I'm sure calls and moves have already been made.

The irony of this thread is that the decline in the leafs' PP happened when.....Tavares got here.

I might try to break down some stats on that at some point, actually.
