Not an ounce of leadership to be found in the organization, top to bottom.
Alright, to be fair, Rielly is a born leader, but he is on an island. It's Matthews' team and Tavares' C, Keefe's lockerroom and Shanahan's plan, so he's one man acting against a sea of soft and entitled bullshit.
This team is a country club for talented players who's measuring stick is how much they get paid. The mistake is that the best players in the league get paid that way because in addition to being superstars, they're also leaders. Our guys get paid more money because they managed to convince the GM(s) that the money comes first and that it's all about the stats. It drives me nuts that Matthews is quite possibly the most talented Leaf to ever lace them up, but the culture of being here for the dollars and that leadership is not reflected in those dollars, starts with him and flows from there. What leg do Marner or Nylander have to stand on if Matthews takes a reasonable contract, rather than clearly stating his intent is to retire as the highest paid player in NHL history?
They want to win, but they don't think about it, focus on it, or have any idea how to do it. They think that if they just keep making the playoffs they'll get lucky one year. As if.
