If the Isles were to lose their last 3 and we win our last 3, we would actually pass them.

That scenario is not likely, though, so I think we should be pulling for the Isles to actually win tonight. A Toronto loss would clinch home-ice for Boston and give them a chance to roll over tomorrow night.

Go Leafs. (this week)

Caps getting smashed, now need the isles to come back and win

Am I crazy or just not reading things right? I know some folks prefer to look above not below, but if we're trying not to match up with Tampa OR Washington, isn't hoping for the Isle to pass the Caps more likely, mathematically, than us passing the Isle?

Both Washington and NYI lose. At least that gives the caps an incentive to play Montreal seriously

Crazy enough, our old friends down I-70 are also still very much alive in the division title hunt. Given their weak finishing schedule, they very well could go 3-0, with 3 ROW. If that happens, they’ll nearly certainly finish ahead of the Isles even if the Isles go 2-0 (they’d be tied in ROW and tied in H2H points. Pitt would nearly certainly finish with higher GD.) If the Caps pick up only 1 or 0 points total in their final two games, the Pens would win the division.

I guess we can add Detroit staying hot to our "Hopes" list ;)

Well, first night we can clinch. CBJ win and a regulation loss by Montreal and we're in. Having said that, it's not CBJ hockey if we don't have more drama. To clinch with two games left just seems too easy for us.

If nothing else, maybe the Pens will tease us with a loss to Detroit tonight.

Magic number to clinch a playoff spot, as documented before, is 4. Any combo of two wins by CBJ or losses by MTL.

Magic number to clinch WC1 is 5. Any combo of CBJ wins or CAR losses gets us there. If everything goes perfectly tonight, we can clinch a playoff spot and be only one point away from clinching WC1.

Ummmmmm.......really? If the CBJ win 3 more games, it doesn't matter what Carolina does. How is the magic number not 3? Maybe it's the fact that I'm an Old Guy and this is some new age thing.

Carolina's best possible finish is 99 points (3-0). Jackets will (likely) have the tiebreaker (94 points right now, peak of 100), so you have to get to 99 points unless Carolina loses and sacrifices the 99 point peak. The more they lose, the lower their peak becomes, thus "magic number".

Made it tougher on ourselves tonight. We still control our fate (as far as making the playoffs go). Thankfully, I also think Washington will win Thursday. They’ll want to clinch the division on home ice rather than risk losing it in New York.

I say “thankfully” because, even though I’d rather face the Isles than the Caps:

1) We still need to just simply clinch a playoff spot first and foremost and we’ve now hurt our odds of WC1 (although certainly not done for sure. It feels like Philly often wins those types of games that are like the one they’ll be playing against Carolina on Saturday).

2) We don’t need the Habs to lose (at the moment), but them dropping one would be nice insurance. And I don’t think they’re losing to a Toronto team with nothing to play for.

3) The difference between the Isles and Caps is relatively marginal.

If we’d won tonight, I probably would’ve cheered for the Habs on Thursday, although, in that hypothetical, the Isles winning the division may have come back to bite us, because...

We blew a major opportunity tonight to put pressure on the Pens. We had a real opportunity to be knocking on 3rd place and a (potential) date with the Islanders. (And if we won, and Pittsburgh beat Washington, the opportunity for our first home-ice advantage in a series. Against the Pens.)

Thursday is a big night. If Montreal wins that game the pressure is going to be squarely on the CBJ to win out, and as a team they don't really respond well to that. If Montreal loses, the pressure isn't as fierce and Friday turns into a win and you're in game.

I think Carolina, short of choking the game against Philly, has pretty much secured WC1.

What a disaster for the CBJ last night. Everything that could go wrong did.

Not every game is going to go our way, but I had to turn off that clown show with around 4 minutes to go in the 2nd last night. So we are basically down to having to get all 4 points in the last 2 games. We can't count on any of the teams to care about the last two games more than Montreal. The teams we are playing have motivation, they want to spoil our playoff hopes.

We are CBJ fans. The way this will actually go is that the Islanders will have a horrible first period against the Panthers and go down 3-0. Caps will see this score and realize they don't need to win to clinch the Metro and thus, will take their foot off the pedal and the Canadiens will cruise to victory. :help:

If we do miss out on the playoffs, I think the team should look back on their relatively abysmal home record for a team of their stature. Especially the regulation losses at home this year to the Sabres, Canucks and Oilers. Those 6 points (or even 4 of them) would have made all the difference.
