A player needs to be able to check to play in a bottom six role. They need to understand stick placement to take away passing and shooting lanes in the defensive zone and passing lanes in the offensive zone. If a player can't do that effectively then there isn't a role in the bottom six for them.

They need to be able to play solid defensively without the puck as the team likely could not afford to pay them if they were very good offensively.
