What is important to happen this season is that the "Dorion stink" starts going away. And while Staios hasn't made core shaking moves, he made a lot of them to allow that to happen IMO.

Yakemchuk could also help in that regard if he proves that they were right to take him as the 2nd best D-man in the draft even though he was seen as the last of the Top-6 D

I think Amadio has been good. Very smart player. Gregor has been disappointing so far.

Not too worried about Amadio, he has a spot and a 2.6 AAV, he's not fighting for his life. Gregor is though and like I said before, nothing special player, he kinda reminds me of Dylan Gambrell. "He's just there", not good or bad defensively, just there. He produced a bit of points on the Sharks so that's what he'll have to do to justify taking a 4th line spot. I think Reinhardt and Jenik are not making him safe

For Amadio, people will have to adjust to the player's type, he's quite slow compared to Joseph so while he is replacing him, it will be a completely different way

I know it's the pre-season, but I think I'm increasingly thinking Soogard just doesn't have it in him to be a starter in the league. Sure, have patience, he's 23, but at some point you have to show "something". He had a good year in the AHL but not spectacular by any stretch.

At this point I see a career AHLer with the off chance of being a poor backup goalie.

I'm hoping Meralainen hits. He seems to have a higher ceiling but not sure if the consistency is there quite yet.

Yeah Sogaard needs to show a big improvement in consistency this season. He has shown good things at the AHL level but outside of flashes of brillance, not much at the NHL level yet.

I think the guy we shouldn't have let go is Joey Daccord, looked like a Top-15 goalie last season. Just checked and he had the 4th highest GSAA, damn

Hoping Ullmark fits and wants to stay

I honestly think Mads Søgaard being a backup next year is fine.

23 is really still very young for a goalie. But I have huge questions about his ability to track a puck and hockey sense in general. I think he has relied on his size too much and simply hasn't developed these traits. Will take a special kinda coach to fix this problem.

Yeah still a development year for him this season, will play the whole season in the AHL. He makes 750 000$ next season so the plan is him to be the back up next season but it could still change depending on how the season goes for him.

I knew these 19 games in 2022-23 were really bad for his development, another thing a good GM shouldn't/wouldn't have let happened. That might have screwed his confidence when moving up to the NHL, it's another big step and he clearly wasn't ready. Now he might be second guessing himself

I thought Chabot was losing his positioning and was being out fought many times tonight. He also does a poor job tying up players in front of the net. Its preseason, but he didnt look great.
That's not he's strength, He's an offensive defenseman that's why we got Jensen

Hard to say but I don't think that is the main objective now. Early preseason games especially on the road would be mostly about trying out lines/pairings and get a look at fringe players. I draw no conclusions from the result in these kind of games other than that it is always nice to beat the laffs..

I thought the Depth pieces looked good, Halliday and Janik played well. Macewen looked like a 4th line RW. We out worked the Leaf’s.

Don't you love the highlight of the game, all goals they show are guess what ... all the Leafs ... other than of course the beauty winner ! Gotta love Sportsnet, they should buy the Toronto Sport Network, homers !!
Ya, I noticed that too... pathetic!

Tbh, best part of Yak's goal was not the deke and finish.

It was the confidence move he made at the start against Matthews. Matthews is a hell of a steal artist, and Yak confidently and calmly skated by him and played the puck past him off the boards and then had the presence of mind to not skate back but attack forward while knowing where Matthews is.

That... that is something you can't teach. For an 18 year old d man to do that against someone like Matthews in overtime(pre-season or not) is pretty nuts.

He'll get a few mulligans early in his career where his opposition doesn't quite know what to expect from him.

In any event, nice to see him have a great game against better opposition after a so-so performance in camp to date.

I watched the whole game yesterday and now rewatching the game highlights.

Trade chabot

Also..austin matthews is/will be one of the worst captains I’ve seen.
So immature and unprofessional. Exactly what that fanbase deserves though.

Obviously lots of things to like last night - the play of Jenik, Reinhardt and Yakemchuk being three that instantly pop to mind, and beating the Leafs with an AHL team.

The negative is Sogaard, who looked exactly like the guy who had a 4.05 GAA and an .859 save percentage in six games in the NHL last year. He gave up two softies last night, and one absolute woofer. It was exactly like last year, when he was a guarantee to give up one soft, absolutely back breaking goal every night, and every shot on him looked like it had a chance to go in because he fights the puck so badly. I cannot believe that they signed him to a two year extension - I would have walked away from him...

I hope the Sens will be checking in with Ullmark regarding the goalie coaches - he is coming from a highly regarded outfit and may have valuable insight. Really think an upgrade is required to that staff to get the most out Mads and Levi.

I think that's terrifying. He literally never knows where the puck is. He slides around where he thinks it is. A goal goes through him every game. I could see him as an NHL goalie but not next year.
Is it just me, but Sogaard’s style seems to lean more towards blocking shots. He doesn’t seem to use his glove all that much.

Lots of talk about Jenik(and rightfully so), but I wonder is Reinhardt could make the team out of camp?

Tho the issue there is we have only three slots for four 4th liners: Cousins, Gregor, Jenik, Reinhardt(and that's not counting Macewen either).
