Gotta be honest, it depends. It was definitely a penalty. There is a lot of padding there, but I've been hit squarely in the cup by the puck, no pain. Also been barely grazed and felt like I was gonna puke.

I've played soccer and gotten hit and felt the same way. I've been hit plenty of times while playing hockey and it's never hurt once nor has it ever warranted that reaction. Looked like he got hit by a .50 cal.
