Ryan should be making 5-5.5 million. He s like Ottawa's version of Schenn. When he plays well, he looks great. Often makes you wonder why he doesn't produce even more. But then has long stretches where you barely notice him and is frustrating to watch.

The thread is a bad one.....we are not trading Simmonds. And I have been one who has entertained that idea on many occasions. But Simmonds is now starting to PK, further rounding out his game and has looked good.

Ok but let's be sure we understand the NHL market first...

Brayden Schenn signed a 4 years extension that includes TWO (2) RFA years (remember PK Subban at $2,875,000 x 2 years?)

Here's the list of forwards actually making 5 to 5.5 :

https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/active/2017/caphit/all/forwards

- Schwartz is 24 y/o and is paid 5.35 with some RFA years included (like Schenn).

- Hossa and Ignila are 37 and 39

- Lupul, Horton and Clarkson are broken down/awful

- Carter is on 11 year contract that was signed in 2010 when the Cap was much lower

- Benn is on a great contract but 4/5 years were RFA. His new cap hit is going to be 9.5

- Hoffman is on a good contract but can be a defensive liability at times.

- Kane is unstable (a head case too) and hasn't produced that well. RFA years mostly, way overpaid.

- Nielsen signed from 32 y/o to 38 y/o. His last 2 seasons, he produced 43 and 52 pts. He is a good player but yeah a tier below.

Ryan was set to cash in on his full UFA 7-8 years contract. Ottawa had to overpay because small canadian market and one of the least desired UFAs destination. If you think that Ryan would have gotten 5 to 5.5 on the open market, then I dunno what to say but you don't live in the same reality as me.

All that being said, I can totally understand if you don't want to trade Simmonds.

If Ottawa was outside looking in would you accept that pathetic offer for Stone? Simmonds is worth much, much more than Stone

Based on? Mark Stone produced at a 66 pts pace per 82 games in his first two NHL seasons. Simmonds had two 60 points seasons in 8 years... Is it because he is a much better player defensively? I doubt it, Stone is excellent. He is also the biggest pick-pocket thief in the NHL by a good margin.

All we see all the time on HF is bold statements like this without much substance, some kind of hyperbole that takes away all the little credibility that the poster had before that. You should put some energy into building a factual argumentation instead because a quote like "Simmonds is worth much, much more than Stone" coming from a guy named "Poignant Discussion" is worth nothing without anything to back it up.

Simmonds is one of those players who brings a lot to the table on the stat sheet, but he also brings so much more that doesn't show up in stats. It's unquantifiable and hard to define. Simmonds adds an air of confidence, call it a toughness to the team. I don't know how else to put it, you just see it. A player like Brayden Schenn scores like Simmonds but just doesn't have that same look or feel. Like I said, it's hard to define.

Don't convince us too hard.
