Two years ago while visiting a friend in Ottawa, I had a couple of really satisfying meals at the Elgin St. Diner. I remember one of them being a smoked meat poutine.
I have a friend who made deliveries to the Elgin Street Diner and said the kitchen was disgusting.

Malone's at Dows was a hole, but it's understandably no longer there.

I'll just jump in and say that most Mexican food in Ottawa ranges from terrible to mediocre at best. If an authentic and delicious taco truck showed up in Ottawa I'd likely be able to fund them for a few months on my own.
La Ha tacos truck in Orleans is great. Fritomania makes really good poutine, probably the best. They use peanut oil and it really makes a difference. French fries taste like chips.

Where do you go for a good steak in Ottawa or Gatineau?

In my backyard.

I can't think of a place that consistently makes great traditionnal beef steaks in the area.

By that, I mean that many places will often have a beef option on the menu, but not always have one, and sometimes they'll serve things like short rib, hanger or bavette . Which are great, mind you, and I tend prefer those options to the T-Bones and RibEyes myself, but aren't really, you know, steaks.

About Indian : +1 for Host India. Hits the very nice sweet spot of quality, consistency, quantity, choice and price. Their Lamb Garlic Curry might just be restaurant dish I've eaten the most in the last five years (probably tied with the Jerk Chicken Poutine from the BBQ Shop... which is about a 5 minutes-walk away from here). Not crazy about EIC and Light of India. I like Coconut Lagoon, but to me it feels more like its own thing. Amongst not mentionned, I like Haldi (convenient for takeout, sometimes) and Little India Cafe (a bit out of the way from my place and really small restaurant).

You guys are extremely lucky to have so much Indian restaurants. Gatineau is an absolute desert in that regards. There's about 3 indian restaurants on the whole South Shore of Montreal (where I grew up).

I tried that hew place "Harmon's" on Elgin, cornering the outrageous prced steak market. You know, 50 and up. Have to admit, it was really good. Keg and Baton Rouge do a solid job as well.

Italian on Preston Street: Giovanni by far. They are good at everything there. With Italian restuarants, there are a lot that good, but only one that I think stands out.

Best pasts dishes can be found at many places. I remember having some incredible pasta dishes at Riviera, and Supply and Demand, which is a also a must visit.

Vivaan is an upscale Indian place on Preston, fantastic meal there.

Pi Squared is an amazing pizza that Italian pizza love, and very different from other pizzas. Even my mangiacake friends rave about it!

To add to the donut theme, if you haven't tried Mr. Puffs - there's one in Gatineau on Montee Paiement right off the highway. Imagine deepfried timbits with sauce on them.

Anthony's on Wellington has the best Pizza I've ever tasted.

Interesting, I ate there last week (not first time) and I think it's just fine but much prefer Tennessy Willems

Also my cardinal rule of pizza is that it needs to have a white gluten dough crust, sourdough pizza is a big shrug from me

Haven't been to Art-is-in in like 4 years and based on some of the stuff I've heard in that time I probably won't be back, but there is no denying they can cook a pie. That sesame seed crust they have is unbelievable. I went like 6 times in a month after discovering them to sample all the different types.
