Ottawa out: pick #7, pick #112, Erik Brannstrom, Josh Norris
Ottawa in: pick #31/32, Linus Ullmark, Morgan Geekie, Scott Laughton

Philly out: pick #12, pick #31/32, Scott Laughton
Philly in: pick #7, pick #112, Erik Brannstrom

Boston out: Linus Ullmark, Morgan Geekie
Boston in: pick #12, Josh Norris

Ottawa gets a goalie and some veteran depth, Philly moves up to get whoever they want at 7 and a depth defenseman, Boston lands a high pick and a potential quality C. If the Bruins were willing to do PLD for Ullmark then why not Norris?

I don’t see why Philly is involved. I’d remove them and have discussions start with Ullmark for 7th Overall.

Also you have pick 31/32 leaving Philly but no destination for it.

Thanks. That pick was supposed to go to Ottawa.

Ullmark doesn't start a discussion for 7th OA lol. Rental's simply don't carry that type of value

Why do the Flyers trade a forward for another defenseman?

Because there is zero chance the Sens trade the 7th for Ullmark straight up.

It's okay for Philly.
Ottawa is giving up too much.
Boston is giving up too little.

Norris, Brannstrom, Dickinson/Buium/Iginla/Parekh and 4th rounder given up is too much to get back Ullmark, Geekie, Laughton and #31/32. People can say "well, Norris is a negative value asset you know", and that might be true, but he could easily turn it around next season. There's no reason for Ottawa to sell rock bottom low on Norris right now IMO unless they're very confident that he's never going to improve from last season. Imagine giving up a (non-elite) 1st line center and a #1 defenseman in this trade... because Norris and 7th overall could turn out to be that.

Yes, those are more examples of the thing you say doesnt happen happening. Lol.

Teams can grant permission to the acquiring team to speak to the player, of which there are also several examples.
Not until the final year of their contract begins they can't. If it was actually a thing teams would do it all the time but it's not.
Here's the list of players post 2005 lockout traded during the summer for a 1st round draft pick of the respective current year when that player is 1 year away from unrestricted free agency:
Seth Jones + 31st - 12th OA (the draft was held July 23rd so he was allowed to discuss an extension prior to the trade), this trade is very commonly viewed as a fleece for Columbus (mainly due to the lottery protected 1st in 2022)
Rasmus Ristolainen - 14th OA (again draft was July 23rd, but no extension was discussed prior to the trade, just a trade request from Risto afaik), again this trade is generally viewed as a fleece by the selling team
Ryan Reaves + 51st - 31st OA and young prospect
Milan Lucic - 13th OA (46% retained by Boston)
Jordan Staal - 8th OA (it was highly likely he would sign an extension due to the family connection)
Brent Burns + future 2nd - 28th OA
*Ben Eager + Brent Sopel - 24th OA (Byfuglien was the main piece in this trade though)
Chris Pronger - 21st OA
Mike Cammalleri - 17th OA
Alex Tanguey - 25th OA
Vesa Toskala - 13th OA

Yeah, they really do. You don’t think Sweeney would give Ullmark’s agent permission to negotiate a deal with a prospective new team to give them comfort with shelling out more assets in a move? That happens all the time in this league.

It’s ok to be wrong sometimes.
If you scroll up literally 1 post you can see every single time it's happened since the 05 lockout.

Lucic also got Martin Jones who they flipped for another 1st and Collin Miller. You have your finger on the scale on a few of these.
