Speculation: Ottawa all but eliminated from playoffs?

i'm starting to get this feeling like maybe i would be satisfied just if detroit didn't make the play-offs either

We play the rangers 2 more times not 3 times. The rangers creamed us last time so I wouldn't say we can easily beat them. We'll probably get a split in the next 2 with them since we own them at MSG.

One of Philadelphia, Tampa Bay or New York are going to miss the playoffs. Ottawa will make it in their spot.

They can't even put a full 60 minutes together. You think they're basically going to run the table the rest of the season and get in to the playoffs?

It's ok. I prefer to support and be optimistic about my team rather than cry, whine and complain about every little thing that isn't working out.

Optimism based on what?

It surely can't be based on anything they've actually DONE this year.

Sens are 13-12-6 at home. Not going to happen. Jersey, Tampa, NYR, Philli and even Columbus and Detroit will probably make it in above the Sens.

Surely not!

The team has been up and down. We've seen spectacular displays and really poor ones. The only thing that's been consistent about this team is that they have been inconsistent. They have beaten some of the best teams in the league and lost to some of the worst.

The issue isn't that they haven't 'actually done something' it's that they aren't doing it consistently.

So, if they can turn it on and click at the right time they could definitely put together a string of games where they go 12 - 5 or whatever it is they need to get into the playoffs. Earlier in the season they had a stretch where they were the hottest (or 2nd hottest) team in the league with an 8 - 1 - 1 stretch or something like that. There is a ton of good to take away from this team.

The year LA won the cup they barely scraped their way into the playoffs struggling through the season and underperforming. Ottawa has the talent to be a big surprise too, or they could just as easily crash and burn. I'm hoping for the former.

December 23 - February 6: 12-4-4 record

They've done it before and I think they can definitely do it again.

And playing great like we did in that stretch we were still 2-6 points behind the last wildcard seed. And now we're...5 points behind the last wildcard seed. We have made no ground. None.

That's the problem people. For us to make the playoffs we need to rip off a 6-7 game win streak AND we need Columbus, Detroit, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Montreal, Rangers, Philly to all implode simultaneously. That probably isn't going to happen so let's be realistic and say that they win half their games...that puts us around 86 points or so.

We can't catch Montreal or Toronto at this point, they are 10 and 9 points clear of us. And we're probably going to be 6 or 7 points out of 8th by Saturday. Washington, Detroit and New Jersey are all facing weak oppositon (Edmontron, Florida and Vancovuer) so...

It's easy to put down the team, and those fans who still have hope.
It's easier to look at the odds and say it's pointless.

It's hard to cheer for a team with their backs against the wall.
It's harder to actually believe they can and will succeed.

IMO, this is what separates casual fans from the hardcore.

If you can't put your whole heart behind the team, how do you expect the players to?

The funny thing is any team on the bubble doesn't really have easy games. The elite teams are the ones that can easily handle the teams that are playing for next year not the bubble ones. We've seen countless examples of how dangerous teams out of it are. Buffalo beat Tampa the other day and the Oilers stormed back to beat the wild last night. Of course we also saw that when we lost two so called easy games in Alberta. I could easily see the Oilers beating the wings on Friday because it's just human nature for teams on the bubble to take the so called easy teams lightly. I'm sure everyone here remembers when we beat the devils twice in 2011 that derailed the hot run they were on and even devils fans point to those two losses as what hurt them badly even though they were still long shots to make it in. We also knocked them out in their last game of the season back in 96 and we were the worst team in the league that year.

I wonder what would happen if I went in to my bosses office, and told him that I can't do my job properly because I am not getting enough positive reinforcement.

Poor from Holmes. You gotta embed the youtube video for full effect. Some of these youngsters probably have no idea what that picture references.

Even the most optimistic of fans has a line they won't cross - if a hardcore fan believes they WILL succeed, then I can't be a hardcore fan unless I BELIEVE they'll win the cup EVERY year. Not HOPE, but BELIEVE. I love this team, I cheer and support them, but I can't set reality that far aside. My line may just not be where it's supposed to be.

Anyone who was a fan for those 4 playoff losses in a row to the Leafs, like myself, learned long ago how to deal with being let down in unbelievable fashion... this missing the playoffs is a cake walk compared to having your pride beat down to nothing like those 4 years.

We're going to win six games in a row? This team can barely string six periods in a row of good hockey. If we're lucky the team won't compeltely **** the bed and will be .500 the rest of the way. That's the only thing I am hoping for at this point.

weve got quite a few games left we should win....and look at the teams there playing over that 6 game stretch.....

If we can rattle off a decent (4-6 games) winning streak starting on Saturday I'll be cautiously optimistic. Until that happens I won't expect playoffs.

I know it CAN be done. 10-3-4 is an entirely possible stretch run, and this team has proven it can go on such a run in Dec - Jan this year...

Whether or not I believe it will happen is a wholly different question.

I don't agree that believing in a team that's continued to play poorly is a really fair way to seperate casual fans from hardcore fans. Sometimes a team just isn't good.
This hasn't stopped me from watching the games, even the ones where we are getting smoked, because I enjoy watching my favourite team play.

Well said.

When your 3 of you BEST PLAYERS are -56 nothing else needs to be said. Sure they score but the SUCK defensively.
