Again, I dont understand what you mean by “Can’t get good players in the draft.” Ottawa will draft whomever the want. If Cameron is gone in July, what difference does it make in that regard? Outside of the first two draft picks, it is unlikely the others will play. Too many returning players.
Recruitment of drafted players does not end a month after the draft and then the team walks away from them never to be heard from again.
Sure, you can draft whoever you want. It's not an issue, BUT the parents can say no thank you.
The recruitment for the draft starts now. If DC is still the coach at the draft, then agents and players will be leery of wanting to be drafted. You can make all the promises, and you can say this or that will happen, but the catch is if the organization is not set and agents do not know who is going to be behind the bench or they are looking at Mickey Mouse, then they can say, "Don't draft Joe Schmoo because he will not report."
HB is a prime example in Ottawa. Kingston actually went through a phase where they had great positions in the draft but had to pass on players.
The last thing Boyd and OSEG want to see is tht they draft a kid that is not in the top 5 in the draft, or worse still, they draft a player, and his agent says sorry, trade him now. We warned you.
Neither is a good look and with a rebuilding team, you need the players now, not hoping that you get a good pick in the defective a year from now.
Parents are going to want to see something, they are going to want to know who is coaching their son, and then they will weigh the pros and cons.
