Ottawa 67s 2024 - 25 Offseason Thread, Part I

I was just wondering if it would be an idea to trade Ekberg before the import draft. His credit would be highest now, and teams that are looking at this year may opt to take him before the crapshoot we call the import draft.

I am not saying trade him but if we are looking to develop the team this year, it might not be a bad idea.

As @OMG67 has stated, there are limits when it is the deadline, but those limits are pretty well gone now before the draft

Why would we do that? You have a 2 year player. Why is there a priority to sell players at all this year? Not only that, we have the open Import slot. I’ve stated countless times that to make the Import slots work, you should only be drafting one. So, this year we fill our open slot and add to what we have (Ekberg). If we trade Ekberg, we need to use our 2nd Import pick which is rarely a good play AND both would be the same age which isn’t good for rotation purposes. Trading Ekberg this a year is horrible strategy. If you are going to trade him, move him next season and only if we suck ass next season. I think we will be competitive though and that’s because of Ekberg.

The only players that should be moved are the players that don’t make the team to start the season because of depth issues and that includes the odd man out OA.

Other than that, we shouldn’t even be thinking about trading anyone. We don’t have any high value graduating players.

Maybe if there is a strategic trade where we move a 17 year old winger for an 18 year old centre or something like that where we strengthen a position of weakness using surplus wingers it would potentially make sense. Or, if someone desperately wants out then so be it.

Everyone needs to remember that most times the player is worth more on your roster than he is via trade. A kid like Foster playing 1C for Ottawa is worth more than a 2nd and 3rd when you lack centre depth.

Vilmer Arliksson is a 4th round Vancouver pick. Kid is 6’6” 234. Scores at just under a point per game. He was traded for a 2nd and two 3rds. Would you rather have two 2nds and two 3rds or Ekberg for two seasons? Seems like a no brainer to me.

calm down
have a beer

I was just asking if it made any sense or would be better to trade a Euro before the Euro draft instead of trying to trade them at the deadline.
Relax

Why are you so adamant about trading everyone we have? That seems to be all you talk about, well except for Cameron... Maybe you should apply for the GM job in Niagara. You certainly have the mindset.

You threw out a “question.” I answered.

You said it may be a good idea to move him now. I differ in opinion and stated the reasons why I differ in opinion.

I then expanded on trading in general and supplied a comparable on what we would likely get in return if we were to trade Ekberg (which isn’t nearly enough).

This wasn’t an attack, nor was it meant to offend. If it came across that way, I apologize. Not the intention at all.

IMO, the emphasis now needs to be on stability. Make a best effort to sign drafted players this summer. Run the team through the motions at training camp and the pre-season. See who emerges and see who falls off. Those that fall off, try to find a landing spot for them if possible. Then run with the team as is through the deadline, see what transpires and use the deadline to make adjustments if necessary. But stability is likely the best course of action which means unless you are getting a really good return, no one should be on the trad block unless they want to leave.

P.S. I don’t drink beer. Beer is for the little folk! I don’t take drugs so the pill is completely outta the question! AND, I will never calm down. I am grown! AND I am close to being old enough to sit on the porch and tell the kids to get the hell off my lawn! You’ll just need to put up with me the way I am! Besides, you are the one in tropical paradise! You should be chillin’ like a villain all day every day….

@44 95 plus tax I have no desire to trade anyone except some of the OA

I agree with @OMG67 this team needs stability and development. The goal has to be to keep the best players happy and sign the ones we need. We also need to let all the players that make it ouf ot traiiing camp play significant minutes it is the best way to develop them and let them get used to OHL hockey

I know DC likes balanced lines but personally, I think he also needs to look at balanced ice time at least for the first couple of months.

rephrase of question

You have a 19-year-old Euro who definitely is going to be a star in the league in their position. Due to restraints, would you get more if you traded them before the Euto import draft or at the deadline?

As to being in Paradise yes it has it;s advantages; beer is cold the weather is hot and snow is something you see on youtube.

Prices are definitely cheaper here LOL

The big thing I miss is sitting at an OHL game cheering.

No lawn so i don't have to worry about the grass LOL

Imports have a wide variable price. Unless they are UBER ELITE, they typically aren’t worth a lot. There usually isn’t a lot of demand. It also depends on if they play a premium position. Defensive d-Man and scoring winger aren’t worth a lot. #1 D-Man scoring D-Man or 1/2C is worth a lot more.

Premium Imports that are signed typically don’t get moved pre-draft. I know Uronen missed the previous season with injury but he was an NHL draft pick and Ottawa got virtually nothing for him.

Unless the player is going to play a massive role, it is likely the trade vale is around 50% of the value of a North American player that provides all the same attributes/production. With respect to Ekberg, it is maybe 50-50 he is even drafted so from a high profile perspective, Ottawa doesn’t even have that going for them. He will play this season as an 18 yaear old. If he scores 80 points as a 1C, then next year the trade value would be considerably high, but still not as high as the same North American player.
