Agree re Mayich's value to the team. He also adds that element of toughness and together with Horner can stick up for his teammates when needed.

Looking at the roster, I see us going with only 7 defences, and one of them is a Midget.

Yes I know we have 8 on paper but can only play either Sirman or Mayich

I have to wonder who they will keep of the 2 I agree mayich is the better of the 2 but that also raises the who can we get the most for.

Based on pre-season play do you start Ekberg with Pinelli

Also looking at needs do you trade or waive Gerrior considering the glut of LW that we have to keep the 2 defenceman

I know this won’t be popular, but I thought Barney was at least…an adventure?

I think Mayich would certainly be the most valuable of the 4 OAs right now, both in terms of trade return and in terms of value on the ice for the 67s. I’m a Gerrior fan and not so high on Sirman but I do wonder how they navigate this particular puzzle.

I think Mayich will play with Eskawkogan. Marrelli will play with Mews. As a top 4, that isn’t bad.

That leaves Brady and Dietsch. For now, Horner moves back to defence.

The reality is the OA market is saturated. Sirman is not worth anything.

Mayich could be on the move but I honestly feel that is only the case if he requests it. I think they will keep the four guys for now and see what shakes out over the first month. Sirman likely won’t see a lot of time but so be it.

I really like the Mayich-Eshkawkogan pairing. Kohyn is young and a bit on the smaller side so it would be good to have Mayich playing with him as a mentor and protector. I think that will be important for his development. I think Mayich’s value to Ottawa far exceeds what his trade value will be in this OA market. We need a steady calming influence back there and he’s the guy that brings it.

Since the OA market isn’t all that great for value, I really feel it is best to put the best three out there and that will be MacKenzie, Gerrior, and Mayich. If they want to sit MacKenzie out and play Nelson, they can bring up Conway to backup and open a spot up for Sirman once per week or so. No big deal. But, if the market is weak for OA value and Sirman is difficult to impossible to move, they may decide to jsut waive him now. Let him try to get on in the QMJHL or WHL.

I agree with you but Conway being in Mississauga is a problem for individual games. He needs to concentrate on playing OJHL

No he does not, getting up to Ottawa being around the team & the atmosphere and watching the pace of play facing the next level of shooters in practice is extremely important for goaltender’s development.

Ottawa, ON
First OHL regular season game tonight! 20 teams will play for the next six months...to eliminate four teams. ;) Oh well - the hockey will still be great. Happy new season to all...

Not overly at all, you would be surprised how often players are flown from Ottawa-Toronto, Toronto to the North & so on when an emergency call up is necessary
Yes but I can not see Ottawa doing that just to get MacK off the ice and bench yo allow Sirman to play

It wouldn’t be to get Sirman playing. It would be to get Nelson playing. If MacK is going to sit, may as well have him sit in the press box and get Sirman a game instead of MacK on the bench with a better view.

Agreed but my question or comment was ot geared in that direction but the fact that Conway is in Mississauga so the only real opportunity would be when they are in the GTA for a road game.

I think if there was an intention of him playing in Ottawa, he’d likely be assigned to an affiliate team here. So, it is unlikely they plan on using him in that manner.

That said, the schedule in the early season does align to potentially use him in that manner.

Game 2 is in Oshawa. Game 4 is in Kingston. Game 7 and 8 are in Niagara and Brampton. Then they do the Northern trip so I could see them add him for that trip. That takes them to almost the end of October. So, the possibility does exist they could fiddle with things a little.

We should know soon. Mayich has returned. All four are on roster. If the intention is to keep MacK and Mayich, the only thing we’d be waiting for is them finding a spot for Sirman which likely won’t happen so he could be released soon. Who knows?

Twelve of twenty teams in the OHL are carrying 4 or more OA’s on roster right now. I think we see some moves tomorrow and Friday afternoon ahead of the bulk of the season openers on Friday.

Definitely not the year to be an OA and want to play. Are there any teams with an opening for an OA?

OA goalies are a dime a dozen

One. Brampton.
Just looked I think they will wait to fill that once they see how things go

It would almost make sense for a rule that has teams down to 3 at the start of comp so that players have a chance to persue other things.

What kind of deal would Sirman have for university.

Really I do not even see a spot for Mayich

Mayich will stay with Ottawa. I doubt Brampton will add him. They need a right side D-Man.

I can see maybe Kingston at the Deadldine looking at Mayich, but like you said, there are a lot of LD available.

If we look at it logically, no one is going to trade for Sirman. He likely isn’t a strong enough OA to unseat any teams current OA. So, if that is true, the only reason to keep FOUR OA’s entering the season is because they are looking to move one of the other three.

IMO, Mayich has the most value. He serves a purpose for a good number of teams in need of a bigger D-Man that can take control in his own end. Mack may have some value but his value will rise only if there are a few teams that are unhappy with their goaltending situation and are willing to solve it with an OA. But, you have to think that Parsons (KIT), and Sztuska (PET) are potentially available in the same way. That leaves Gerrior. We are deeper on the wings so there can be an argument made that he would be the most likely to be released/traded. The question is whether he has value to the point they could trade him or whether he would be waived. I think it would be a shame if it came down to that to be honest. But, the reality is, we need Defence more than we need depth on the wings.

We will see how this all shakes out soon.
