After educating myself through reading the wizard-mind takes on hfboards, I'd like to set a few things straight...

Linus Ullmark stinks, and his contract is brutal. The 8 games he struggled following an injury is the true sample size that shows what he is. Yeah, he was a good goalie for 7 years, but that doesn't matter. And his current insanely hot stretch of 7 games is a fluke, he'll soon revert to his usual self, which was the 8 games of struggle.

Korpisalo is one of the best goalies in the NHL. His good play for 1 month is the most important sample size. Ignore his 7 year career of inconsistency and mediocrity, that's what we call a small sample size. And his .901 is actually better than Ullmark's .910, because Ullmark is once again benefitting from a great defensive team, what the Ottawa Senators are known for.

Mark Kastelic may be on the 4th line, but he is an ascending star. Sure, he has 0 goals 3 assists in his last 20 games, but that's a small sample size. As is his inconsistent play with the Sens. He'll soon revert to his typical 7 points in 11 games form of October.

Conclusion: brutal trade by the Sens. Ullmark's luck will soon run out, and he'll be back to his usually crappy self. Kastelic and Korpisalo would have guaranteed a 100 point season from the Sens.

To be fair and unsarcastic for a moment, I still believe in Jeremy Swayman. He was outstanding for the last 2 years. The insane pressure after holding out and signing a huge contract is giving him problems. I guarantee he returns to form and has good seasons in most of his contract, whether he returns to form this year or next year.

I accidentally hit the like button after the first paragraph but then I realized you were being sarcastic. I just want you to know that my like isn't valid.

Hate seeing all this cope from Sends fans about the trade. I still wear my Kastelic jersey and I get so many comments when walking down Elgin Street. The everyday fan knows what's.up about the great swindling of June 25th.

So yeah, ignore that like. I unlike your post.

Kastelic was a throw in and hes been a solid 4th liner korpi and ullmark numbers are a wash right now and that 1st round pick was a sweetener and dont forget you guys are paying a portion of korpi salary for his term of contract. I don't see how we lost the deal at the moment?

Wait, you were not joking with all this?

Nonsense we haven't seen that dean leternaeu kid play yet he could be a stud.

Even if the pick turned into Kucherov, the initial value was a late first round pick, no matter what. The team getting the pick can always improve the quality of their return by making the best possible selection. It doesn't have anything to do with the team that gave the pick though

So it seems that it's a bit of a gamble to pay 8.25 mil to a goalie that has yet to play a single game for your team. Imagine that. Sometimes it pays off, but most of the time it doesn't.
they don’t pay him 8.25 until next season.

This thread is back up? No way! It was the thread that just kept giving until it was closed!

@The don godfather, can you come and give us an update on how great Mark Kastelic is? Is Korpisalo still awesome in your mind? Is Dean Letourneau's 0g-3a in 35 games at BC still filling you with excitement?

Come on back and tell us by what margin Boston has won this trade.

Steve Staios deserves a ton of credit for this trade and getting Ullmark to sign a contract in Ottawa. Ullmark has played extremely well since the first few games of the season. He’s kept the team in games they shouldn’t be in and makes huge saves at key moments.

More importantly, he gives the team a lot of confidence. The guys know he will likely bail them out if they make a mistake. Everyone is playing with a little more confidence and Ullmark looks solid, calm and composed in net every night. He’s a major reason why the Sens are in the playoffs this year. He helps the D move the puck as well… Exiting our zone is easier with Ullmark back there which is another added bonus that’s often overlooked.

Then Ullmark will also be an amazing mentor for Merilainen. This stabilizes a position that the Sens just couldn’t figure out for the next 4 years. He’s a top notch human being and leader in the room.

Real tidy work by Staios essentially giving a late 1st, a 4th liner and a cap dump for a #1 goalie. Highway robbery. It’s not every day you can add a core member of your team for bits and pieces.

Ullmark has been exactly what Ottawa needed, finally bringing some stability to the net. Still can’t believe we dumped Korpi to get him. A+ by Steady Steve

Only reservation I have is the NMC. Losing Merilainen in an expansion draft could be a disaster.

Small sample size, only 10 games, but he becomes an AHL goalie come playoff time when the pressure is on.

He is 3-0 with a .924 save% in his last 3 games with Ottawa trying to solidify a playoff spot.

He's also 8-2 in his last 10 games and his overall save% (.902) is deflated because of one really bad game against Colorado. Take out that 4 goals on 13 shots performance and he's at an 8-1 record with a .913 save% over those 10 games.

Congrats on not addressing anything I said and removing a game in the process, just because.

Kastelic has been good when healthy and was signed to an extension leternaeu is just a kid so we dont know anything yet . Korpi has played well in terms of a depleted team that got the memo to tank to get a high draft pick. Trade was solid and we still dont have a clear winner in this deal . Might take a few years to really pan out especially in leternaeu case only 18 years old.

As a Bruins fan I absolutely hated this trade at the time and hate it just as much today. Sweeney is a brutal gm. How anyone was pumping this deal up on our end are people simply deflecting reality. Korpisalo is a not good expensive back up with term. Nothing about this trade made sense and B's fans being pumped about the best part being a 4th liner is insanity. There's never anything to be excited about with the Bruins drafting as they aren't good at it under Sweeney's leadership. Then add in we moved him in division for that terrible a return is beyond me.

Kastelic & Korpisalo are what they are, and fourth line centre and a negative value cap dump.

Leternaeu had a pretty bad D+1. He would have to have a very notable turn around for this not to be completely lopsided.

One replacement level player, a late first (who is way underperforming) and a cap dump is not the value of a legit NHL starter 2 years removed from a Vezina - period.

But thanks for coming back and entertaining us all, it really is appreciated!

Linus wasnt spectacular this season especially early in the season the other goalie kid had a large part of sens turnaround this season. Linus has played well you can say last 20 games or so. Will see come playoff time if A he can stay healthy and B if he can turnaround his awful playoff statistics so far in his career.
