OT: Other Sports: Broncos, Nuggets, Rockies etc…Part VII

I said earlier he needs another reliable pass catching target. It doesn’t need to be a TE. You’re the one who brought up personnel/coverages. You made your own nothing burger.

Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates, Travis Kelce, Rob Gronkowski...none were taken in the first round. People are talking like the 1st pick Denver has needs to be a TE. Rob Gronkowski went in the 2nd but he was a good run blocker. That barely exists anymore.
I merely suggested a tight end would be a good addition given ours suck. We have a mid top wr, and potential in a couple recent draft picks with Mims and Franklin, and Vele. I don't think wanting a good TE is a bad idea.

Nothing burger? Great TEs are a complete mismatch because of, yes, coverages and personnel.

If you can grab a TE though that is gifted in both receiving and run blocking, you gain such an advantage with mismatches. When you have a dual threat TE and he's covered with a safety, you gain an advantage in the running game. If the other team puts a LB on him, you gain an advantage in the passing game. It's definitely a game of chess though because now teams are trying to get bigger safeties and LB's who have speed/can cover to counter dual threat TE's. I would strongly argue that a TE is needed because we need help in both the running game AND passing game. We have run blocking TE's on the roster right now but it's a complete tell to the defense what we are going to do when they are in there, and they don't pose enough of a threat in the passing game to really stretch the defenses.

I love Tyler Warren in this draft because the dude can play all over the place (TE/FB/WR) and is huge. I just think he's going to be gone by the time the Broncos draft.

Unfortunately I think the days of finding hidden gems at the TE position may be gone. The Antonio Gates/Shannon Sharpes of the world now kill it at the combine and teams have figured out those uber physical specimens can be molded into good TEs fairly easily. The scouting on TE's seems like it has progressed a lot from 10 years ago.

No kidding
I believe they’ll take two in the first 3 rounds. Who they take exactly where, I suspect they’ll take the best player available.

They do need to improve the TE position. As others have said, a good TE offers match up problems that other positions don’t.

None of these players are must haves. Strnad and Jones were both pretty good, but not irreplaceable. And Jones is over 30.
I think the only guy on the list that I would want back is Barton. He played pretty well as a stopgap and he's possibly the best coverage LB I've seen in an orange uniform since Trevathan (he's not anywhere near Trevathan, but our LB's always tend to suck at coverage).

.....All that being said, he probably is going to get a bigger opportunity/contract somewhere else. The dude very well deserves it.

The P being a free agent worries me. Geez I hope we don't spend a draft pick on a damn punter. And I guess we will definitely need to sign a backup QB.

Ive been pounding the Tyler Warren drum for months now but like Bonzai said I think the Broncos draft spot is much lower now and Warren's stock has sky rocketed. He would do wonders for Bo though. He never comes off the field he can block, catch, run and do hundred other things being a former QB. Those mid range third downs would be a lot easier to stomach with Warren

Tankathon mock draft has him going 14th. Wonder if the Broncos like him enough to move up from 19 to get him.

They badly need a TE. A look at Super Bowl winners shows just how important a great TE is to a great offense.

Jerry Jones is such a freaking a-hole

Blocks McCarthy from interviewing with the Bears, and then doesn't re-up his contract (with supposedly no offer even being put on the table). Yeah McCarthy might not be Vince Lombardi, but what Jones just pulled is plain being a terrible human.

You said it better than I could at the moment. I don't think he will listen regardless.

Skattebo would go that late in the draft?
Granted I'm not nearly as well versed in football as I am in hockey. But he doesn't seem like someone who will translate to the NFL to me, at least not as a lead back. He has good power for a college guy and fine enough speed for a college guy, but I'm not sure he has enough power to offset what is just decent NFL speed/agility. Kyren Williams has some similarities to Skateboo, but his vision is unreal so he can get away with lesser physical traits than other RB's. But that's also what made Kyren a 5th round pick and what makes Skateboo a late-ish pick as well imo.

I'm struggling to figure out where he's honestly gonna go....

Speed/Power - People say he's slow, but there's PLENTY of nfl backs that run a 4.5....He can run with power no doubt

Passing Game - He pretty much blows away any other back in this draft with the amount of receptions/yards this year at ASU...he had something like 500/600 receiving yards... and he's definitely a capable pass blocker

Size - He's 5'10 or 5'11 and about 215...I think this is where Skattebo's gonna have to put in the most effort - making sure his body is in top notch shape.......The most accurate comparison I've seen thus far is Marshawn Lynch (also 5'11i-sh and 215)...I think Marshawn was a bit more ripped but they have very similiar running styles....Just for fun Marshawn's 40 time was 4.45, so not that entirely far off.

My guess is that he goes in the second or upper third round. There's going to be teams that think hes too small/slow and go strictly by combine numbers but then there's others that are going to draft off college production and will have him higher on the board. I think someone will basically reach for him. Just dunno where. There are a glut of good RB's though that will be available in rounds 2/3.
