Probably because it was game 6 on Saturday that he pitched.

my bad haha

They didnt really have a choice with the bullpen game. Sucks that Gonsolin and May arent replicating their regular season success. May in particular is not hitting his spots or getting any movement on his pitches and they are hitting the ball really hard off of him. Rays had a leg up with the extra day off that the AL got. Need Walker on full rest, Urias still burnt after game 7. Now we have games 3-5 and 7 lined up, game 6 would obviously be another BP game.

The extra day rest was a pretty big advantage for Tampa. May and Gonsolin are rookies, so I'm not too concerned long term. I think May in particular isn't being used well and the sporadic nature of these playoffs haven't done him any favors. Beuhler is special. He's just fearless and goes right at batters. Urias is also a stud. Those 2 guys are the future of the rotation. We're going to need a classic Buehler performance tomorrow for sure.

The way Buehler amped up in his last outing with runners on in the early going was spectacular. The Braves couldnt touch his fastball.

The reason they didn't have a choice was because of the previous choices they made with May and Gonsolin.
They were starters all season and were very good. Then playoff started and they decided they are now relievers who would only pitch 1-2 innings.
These two guys obviously haven't performed as well as they did in the regular season.
But they shouldn't be put in positions they haven't been in all season. Coming in with runners on in the middle of an inning for example.
They really haven't been put in the best position to succeed.

Sounds like a Dave Roberts special, like putting Jansen in for a multi inning save when he had never done it before and lo & behold, he blew it. Someone should tell Roberts the postseason is not the time to dick around and try new things.

This doesnt really make sense. Dustin May has 26 career games, 14 of which are starts. He’s familiar with coming out of the pen (and has mostly been really good at it). 20/14 for Gonsolin (his first two years in the minors were strictly in relief). Either way - both have started and come in relief over the CS and WS, and it hasnt made a difference in their performances.

Dustin May batters faced:

Game 1 NLDS -Grisham, Tatis, Machado, Hosmer, Pham, Myers
Game 3 NLDS - Grisham, Tatis, Machado,
Game 1 NLCS - Riley, Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, D'Arnaud, Albies, Swanson, Sandoval
Game 5 NLCS - Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, D'Arnaud, Albies, Swanson, Riley, Markakis, Pache, Acuna, Freeman
Game 7 NLCS -Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, D'Arnaud, Albies
Game 2 WS - Margot, Wendel, Adames, Kiermaier, Zunino, Meadows, Lowe, Arozarena

Roberts is trying to maximize the amount of times May faces the heart of the opponent's lineup. In the first 2 rounds he only faced the #9 spot once, but the bolded hitters are 17/33.
