I'm not really for a cap in baseball so much, it's a major sport and even smaller markets should be able to turn a profit by trying. Still, it's limited in that it's really only a major sport in the Americas and Japan.
What keeps Soccer so exciting and relevant without a cap is are the other events that go on. In addition to league play, you have domestic cups, Champion's League, Europa League, and so on. Some, like the FA cup in England, are open to teams from nearly all levels, over 700+ across England where some teams in the bottom leagues get matches against teams from the top leagues. The geography and economics are different because of the proximity of a bunch of developed countries, but it would be cool if there were more things like this in baseball. The season could be shortened keeping interest higher with the same revenue coming from other competitions.
It only takes a committed owner to get a club to relevancy. Chelsea and PSG were virtually irrelevant before their billionaires took over.
