Mr. Jack White.

So who's the person who said Soler wouldn't be promoted for a while? I called it (as far as being called up soon).

It was I. And I was wrong on him staying in AA. Soler was tearing it up relentlessly. He still won't be up this year on the Cubs though.

Bringing in Manny Ramirez as a player/coach looks to be a brilliant move by Theo just having a guy like that in the organization and on the field with the players.

So Giancarlo Stanton will have 2 years of team control left. I really wish the Cubs would make a run at him this off season. I know some will disagree but I'd trade Baez and Almora for him then give him a huge 8 or 10 year deal for 200+ mil.

If we did something like that, we would need to sign him immediately. The last thing we need is to trade two stud prospects for him then haggle him to death until he tests UFA.

Think of this line up

1. Alcantara (CF)
2. Castro (SS)
3. Rizzo (1B)
4. Stanton (RF/LF)
5. Bryant (3B)
6. Soler (RF/LF)
7. Valbuena (2B - save a spot for Russell)
8. Castillo

Thats an extremely cheap line up even if you pay Stanton 20+ mil with a big extension

That line up also allows you to go out and spend on pitching. Lets say they get Lester then go after and get Maeda. Your pitching staff is:

Lester
Arrieta
Maeda
Wood
Hendricks

You can try to give away Jackson or move him to long relief/bullpen. You also have a bunch of young, cheap, hard throwing guys in the bullpen.

That team can compete right away.

From a fan POV, we have no clue how much or how little Ricketts is willing to invest in the payroll. For piece of mind, I'd like to see us sign the top UFA in a class first before feeling comfortable trading that kind of package for a player close to UFA. It would effectively kill the rebuild if we did that and he walked because we low balled him.

You're not going to make that trade without having an idea of the contract extension he'd want.

I imagine we are talking 27-30M a year. Seems like a move for someone else. You sign a guy like that, you are basically locked in to a top 5 MLB payroll if you are serious about competing. You never know I guess but even a team like the Cardinals would never make a move like this IMO.

The Cubs have about $50 mil committed to payroll for next season. They could add $70 mil in payroll and still not be in the top 10.

Not a fan of trading for Stanton. Stanton is an awesome player but I have to believe the prospects coming through now can form a devastating batting order. Bryant #3, Rizzo #4, Baez #5. Cubs have a lot of options for infield and outfield positions depending on how the prospects develop.

Save the money for acquiring arms in a few years when the time is right.

Stanton is one of the 5 best hitters in baseball and he's 24. If any of the Cubs prospects turn out to be Stanton, it'd be incredible.

The most attractive part of what we have going right now is that we probably could have a middle of the pack payroll and have one of the best teams in baseball just by making good supplementary moves. I love Stanton; this just seems too risky for us. If it goes bad, like he walks or ends up injured, we're severly handicapped with what we can do to overcome it. Stanton is a move the Yankees should make. They could use some more star youth badly.

You don't get bonus points for winning with a low payroll. There's a reason the Cubs were willing to take a $120 million gamble on Tanaka. They have the money, they just want to spend it wisely.

That's Jack White's expression for "golly, I'm having such a wonderful time."

So who's the person who said Soler wouldn't be promoted for a while? I called it (as far as being called up soon).

To be fair, his program to stay healthy is just that he gets pulled out of games early now, which I've never seen with position players.

I'd gladly offer up a Baez package for Stanton. Kick in Vogelbach if you want him, too. At best he's Casey Kotchman.
