Disagree. Without humanity all the **** that goes on would mean nothing.

A sentient, evolved lifeform gives the glory of our universe meaning.

All the **** that goes on does mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. In the words of the aforementioned Bill Hicks, life is "just a ride". There's reason to try and make the consciousness that we consider 'life' as satisfying a ride as possible, but ultimately, it's just a ride.

A meteor could hit the Earth tomorrow and everything that Man has ever created would be obliterated in seconds. Totally inconsequential to the Universe as a whole.

I'm going to have to agree with Bob's previous post here. If the universe is really infinite in size, then there are other life forms that are equally as 'great' as humans.

Sure, but not in our solar system. I don't think you can say the achievements of humanity mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

BUT (using my own philosophy) since we humans are only susceptible the sensory perceptions of our surroundings, it is fair to say that we are the center of the universe. That's where BlueshirtBlitz makes tons of sense.

That's putting us at the center of the universe. Who says there's not some intergalactic council with a bunch of species evolved far beyond what humans are.

Because we've never encountered them. I'm not willing to say that humanity doesn't mean anything. Even if in the far reaches of the universe there is another society that has also accomplished such amazing progress and they go extinct doesn't mean that doesn't mean anything to the universe. Without advanced life forms like humanity, the universe has no comprehensible meaning.

I agree for the most part, but I don't we're the most important living entities- I think every sentient life form akin to us, that is able to give meaning to the universe, is theoretically as important.

It really depends on how you look at it. Saying that Idealistically, we are the center of the universe makes absolute sense. There are many other ways you can view the human race through Idealism, though.

What makes humanity so awesome, in my opinion, is our ability to understand this complex universe. However, it seems doubtful that we will ever be able share the information we have gathered with anyone other than members of our own species. The chances that we can communicate with another life form, nevertheless share all we know about the universe, is slim to none.

Once human life is done on this Earth, all of our accomplishments will be lost forever. If we can't share our findings with others, I don't feel we really accomplished anything in the grand scheme of things.

Just my opinion, however.

Yep, exactly.

It's why I hate really theoretical philosophies like metaphysics. Without humans, it doesn't matter if time is cyclical or linear or anything, since we're not there to experience it.

It's strange- I love the more applied philosophies (especially political philosophy) and absolutely abhor others.

Absolutely true. I love Science, but there are some things it absolutely can't explain. That's when I turn to Philosophy.
