Police in India this week arrested a pigeon on charges of spying for Pakistan. As BBC News reports, the pigeon was taken into custody on Thursday after a 14-year-old boy found it in a historically tumultuous region along the India-Pakistan border. The bird, whose name has not been disclosed, reportedly had a "stamped message" on its body that was partially written in Urdu. The message also included a Pakistani phone number. An X-ray of the bird didn't show anything out of the ordinary, but police have nevertheless registered it as a "suspected spy" and are keeping it in custody.

"WE HAVE CAUGHT A FEW SPIES HERE."

"This is a rare instance of a bird from Pakistan being spotted here," police superintendent Rakesh Kaushal told The Times of India. "We have caught a few spies here. The area is sensitive, given its proximity to Jammu, where infiltration is quite common."

This isn't the first time that a bird has been caught in the middle of an international dispute. In 2008, Iranian authorities arrested two pigeons accused of spying on a nuclear facility, and a stork was detained in Egypt two years ago after being spotted with a mysterious device attached to its feathers. Others have been targeted as potential terrorists. Last year, Chinese officials probed 10,000 pigeon anuses amid fears that they may be carrying bombs.

For what it's worth, the property management company is vehemently denying that the flyer is "real," (or rather, I should say, originated with them/was at their behest) even though there's zero doubt that the language in question actually appeared in real-life:

--and call me Mr. Pollyanna, but I'm having a hard time believing that an even semi-sophisticated property management company in, of all places, South OC would just be this stupid to propagate something like this, let alone vile and bigoted. Maybe time will prove me wrong...

Heh, I think this whole situation is going to get....interesting. UCI and its surrounding area seem to draw more than their "fair share" of race/cultural controversies; 11 years ago, it was fears of disruption at graduation (and then a few years later, major uproar at an Israeli Ambassador's speech there). "Makes me proud to be an Anteater..."

On Friday, Marty McKenna, a spokesman for Equity Residential, insisted that while the poster had appeared in the apartment, the management company was not responsible for posting it. He said the company was trying to find out who was behind it.

“It was at the property but it was not created by us or put there by us,” he told The Independent. “We don’t put up posters. We communicate with our residents by email.”
