OT: OT Thread Part II - It's cold?

No one understands why you would even compare the two. What it boils down to is that one is about songwriting and the other about musicianship.

For me, I see enough ****ers on guitar that musicianship has begun to take a serious back seat to songwriting. That's in everything, not just my disdain for Pink Floyd.

I think musicianship and the ability to write compelling music go hand-in-hand, but you're right, just because you can play an instrument like it's a part of your body doesn't mean you will write great music with it.
 
Alright, let's get back to 2000's NJ punk/emo.

Although I will say that I always thought of the Velvet Underground as the yin to the Beatle's yang.

Great musician and great writer are two very different things. We have just been spoiled by the fact that some very talented people can do both really really well. I would add great singer but I guess that could fall under musician

To follow on the Beatles theme. Listen to Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles, then by Ray Charles and finally by Aretha Franklin. I think Paul and John were amazing writers but I highly doubt they are near the top of anyone's top bass or guitar players.

Now take Jimi Hendrix. He was crafting albums on par with the Beatles fronting his own band and arguably a guitar virtuoso.

We haven't even touched on the fact that the Beatles and Rolling Stones etc benefitted greatly from black music and musicians and their ability to "borrow" from that genre like Elvis and led zep etc

Look no further than some classical musicians. Some never compose their own music but can play some of the most complex works on their instrument.

They really don't. They are entirely different attributes that come from very different places. One is a technical skill applied, hopefully, with emotion. The other is an act of creation (which shouldn't be confused with a creative act). The best of all are the people who can do both, but it's rare. The one's who are phenomenal at one or the other also can get recognition. Look at all the virtuoso guitarists who can't write a song to save their lives: Vai, Malmsteem, Satriani, etc. Look at all the amazing lyricists/writers who don't do anything spectacular with the instrument: Lennon/McCartney, Grohl, Cobain, Cantrell, etc.

There are some that combine... Clapton, for example. But the extremes are actually more common.
 
Being good at guitar doesn't necessarily make you good at guitar, if you feel me. Friend of mine not only didn't know any music theory, but essentially didn't like it, and she wrote beautiful songs. Then there's this other guy who is classically trained, finger picking classic guitar and everything, but I was just like, dude, ****.

I don't remember any specific people, but I've heard of a few guys who don't even know how to read music.
I also took sax lessons with some pro before, and we never wrote any notes

Steve Harris is an example of both. Writes a lot of Maiden songs and has the right hand of doom.
