Islands in the stream.
They have a plan to "develop" the lands. I went to one of the open houses and I must say I was far from impressed. The guys delivering the info were all from Calgary. Talking to them they made a whole bunch of statements that convinced me they had no idea what the area around the development is all about. Lots of utopian statements about how wonderful the area will be once it is finished. My guess is that it will be a disaster and that it will take over a decade to see anything of substance in the area.
We get so much of this type of pie in the sky sales pitch in Edmonton. Probably happens everywhere but there seems to be even less respect for builds here. But worse the COE agreed to the lease with Katz that Rexall could not be used in any way for entertainment. Even though it was a build that was funded by taxpayer dollars. Lots of history there, the building is overall solid. But deemed to be of no lasting value.

I find it incredibly odd that in an age where we're trying to reduce footprint, carbon, emissions, etc that we treat built facilities as disposable. It seems irresponsible, and in most places would be untenable to just demolish structures all the time. In Europe facilities, buildings stand for centuries. Rexall will have had a shelf life of 40yrs from build to demolition and a used life of just over 30yrs.

If you want to see further examples of utopia here check out the City initiatives in the Blatchford "development" or the troubles in the Century Park development. Where the beautiful Heritage Mall (that wasn't old, just 25yrs old, was completely demolished to make way for a Century Park housing development that was supposed to have over 10K residents within about 10yrs.

Whats happened instead is nobody is buying in Blatchford, and especially in a downturn economy with inflation and higher interest rates. There never were the amount of buyers they thought there would be for Century Park. The original developers sold out and the builds now don't even resemble the original build out.

I am aware of both projects. Take Blatchford and target it at low income individuals. That is what you have with the Northland Lands plan. It is completely unrealistic to think that developers will be willing to invest the kind of money it will take to execute their plans without huge subsidies. They seem to think that just because there will be an LRT stop near the southwest end of the project that people will flock to the area.

One of the anchors is an "education/civic" center. But they had no idea what institution might be interested. I asked about Concordia University of Edmonton and they had no clue about where they were even located. They also expect a major "employment anchor" on the east side of the existing baseball fields but had no sense of what this meant other than it could be a large "campus" style development. What sort of companies would consider a large "campus" style presence in Edmonton? And if they were is that the location they would choose???

I think only 1 decade would be pretty optimistic. Inner city land is this city sits undeveloped for a lot longer than that and that was when times were good.

This picture reminds me of something the other day. My boy is going to be 13 soon and he's asking if, when and where he can work to start making his own money. He was going through a (mental) list of job ideas after I told him what he can do at 13 per labor and OHS laws. Of course he asks about newspaper delivery and it kind of hit me how technology has vastly stolen the most basic introductory job to the work force for young boys and girls.

There's still newsprint flyers which are delivered to houses but the morning paper delivery seems like a thing of a past. Maybe in the larger centers there's still newspaper delivery but I imagine even that is sparse.

If he has absolutely no shame, how about a telemarketer?;)

I haven’t bought a newspaper in years but I was in the store yesterday and caught a glimpse of what the Edmonton Sun’s Sunday paper looks like now. The entire paper looks to be about half the size as the comics pullout that used to come in the Sunday edition was. I wish I could have delivered that as a kid, lol.

Bryan Hall moving to weekly broadcasts at 88 years of age:

I remember as a kid listening to his Eskimo broadcasts back in the 60's and of course to "The Point After". The old "What ever happened to Earl Edwards" always got a rise out of him. He'd call guys a jerkaloo and cut them off.

In the later years doing the Eskimo games he was always so far behind the play it was funny. Calls like ... He's at the 20, the 30, teh 40, ...Touchdown!!!!! as if the guy ran 70 yards in a fraction of a second. But there is no denying he is a legend and an icon of the Edmonton sports scene.
One of my all-time favorites from Hallsy, was when my dad and I were listening to the radio before an Eskimos game, and he had Laraque in the booth with him for the whole game as a special guest. I remember the 2 were going back and forth with little jokes left and right, when Hallsy said to Laraque "Let's make a bet. If the Eskimos win the game by a certain margin (I think it was 14 points), I'll take you out to eat. If they don't you'll have to take me out to eat". And Laraque being the betting type said "Deal". Well, fast forward through the game, and the Eskimos won by a large margin (38 - 13), and my dad and I popped the radio back on to listen to the post game, and Laraque said at the end "Well Hallsy, guess you'll be taking me to TR right?" as at that point, Hallsy would only talk about Tony Romas OVER and OVER and OVER. But then as a surprise twist of events, Hallsy replies "Oh no, I'll take you out to a nicer place". The next 2 hours was HILARIOUS because EVERYONE was calling into the show and blasting Hallsy for saying Tony Romas was not a nice place, and he would cut off the callers or deny any proof he said that. Was one of the best moments I've heard on the radio from him hahaha.

Once they lost the 60 pages of car ads the paper really did become quite small.

As expected......now that Hawrlyuk is closed Emily murphy parking lot is crammed.

On most days it has a lot of cars due to U of A students and staff parking there, now with Haw closed it is almost totally full and this is on a non peak time of year.

Bah! Humbug!

Why will it take 3 years to do the upgrades? What is the plan? It must be something significant.

All under ground water services, all electrical service, cell phone stuff, all roads, all shelters etc. That all will take two years the last year essentially will be allowing things to grow back undisturbed.

You should have listened to his Esk post game broadcasts when callers would ask, “where’s Earl Edwards” dozen or so times. He went Rambo slamming phones.

Callers eventually got sneaky and started the conversation normally, allowing for the 7 second delay to kick in. And then wham!

I don't know too many projects that end up being completed in time in this City. Be lucky if it's done in 5 years
Yup, if the city adheres to their typical timelines, I hope they have plenty of wheelchair ramps for me!

The coyotes that live in mayfair park will be very pissed off at all the fencing. (Time to change the name back to what it should still be.)

I agree. Have no idea why they named it for a former mayor who was forced to resign once and had to quit another time due to shady and sketchy land dealings. The wokesters are busy tearing down everything else, but this would be a good one for them to get involved in and I for one would be okay with it.

This is absolutely devastating for the City of Edmonton, EPS and the officer's families. May both officers rest in peace.

The timing of that is really spooky. About half an hour ago my boss and I were talking about how in the history of Edmonton only three police had been killed in the line of duty. Which I think was true two days ago.

Neither of us had heard about the incident this morning. So sad.

Edit: turns out eight police officers have been killed in the line of duty. Six prior to this incident.
