People always say this and, to be completely honest, I think it's total ********. Which will I survive - falling out of the sky at 30,000+ while going 550 mph or being hit at 65 mph in my truck by a drunk driver? I've been hit by two drunk drivers and some kid texting. Still here.
I agree with you. It's not safer statistically speaking. Going by stats you are likely to be able to fly every day of your life and never experience anything more than rough turbulence, whereas you stand a pretty decent chance of being in a car accident, such as you already have.
The reason I fear flying more than driving is when you are driving, you have an opportunity (sometimes) to take evasive action. You are in control of your vehicle and maybe can have an impact on the accident.
On a plane, if anything goes wrong, you are simply buckled in for the ride and have your life in the hands of someone else.
Additionally, in some plane accidents, you have several minutes to panic before impact, such as if you are falling out of the sky or on that GermanWings flight. I couldn't imagine knowing I'm likely to die, and then having like four minutes to think about it.
And don't get me going on these recent pilot suicides where they take passengers with them.
Jeff, if you don't fear flying, be sure to not start watching Mayday. I love that show but it sure makes you think a bit more about getting on a plane.
I was thinking teleportation.
