final fantasy 14 is another mmo that hits the "just logging in to do a couple things" itch pretty much perfectly since you can do literally everything in the game with one character

So far just a Norn Ranger. Figured I'd get it up to level 20 or so before trying others. I do like being able to just hop on whenever I get a chance and run through a couple of things, but I still don't think MMOs are my cup of tea. I need to shoot things in the face.

play D&D and you can do both :D

Fair plays, playing a ranger atm myself, quite enjoying it, but can't decide between ranger and engineer (turrets, flamethrowers and grenades are just too much fun).

I wish every sports game had a difficulty setting, where there was no difficulty to speak of. Players stats just interacted with each other for what they were. For example, just finished playing a game of NCAA 14 and my 5'9" 180lbs HB with a speed of 92 just got chased down from behind by a 6'4" 320lbs Defensive Tackle 20 yards past the line of scrimmage.

Yeah, cause that would actually happen irl

On a sort of related note, Madden used to have something a while back that I have never seen in any other sports games, and of course it was removed, but it was a variable difficulty setting. The CPU difficulty would adjust game by game to your performance, so the game was never too easy or too difficult. Too often in games I can't find a good difficulty setting because one level is too easy and one is too hard.

Yeah, when I played the NHL games more I would kick ass on All Star, or whatever the second highest was, relatively easily. But put it on Super Star, and all of the sudden the computer is scoring like 3 goals on 5 shots, and two of those would be on breakaways by Hal Gill and Craig Adams.

Tempted to get NHL '15... I had NHL '12 and only played it when I had people over, prior to that the last NHL game I had was NHLPA '93 (actually, I did have NHL Hitz as well). Worth it, or no?

Still rolling with a 360 (bought a second 360 for my wife instead of buying a One). Is there some mode that you build teams with random player cards you open? Seemed interesting, but that's the extent of my understanding of it.

That's the Hockey Ultimate Team mode that halleJOKEL mentioned. Basically you start out with a deck of (pretty awful) player cards from across various leagues and some additional cards. As you play games/tournaments with your Ultimate Team team, or in other game modes in the game, you will earn pucks. As expected, wins get your more pucks than losses. Those pucks are used for your currency system with which you are able to purchase more/better card packs, which should theoretically improve your team based on how much you spend.

The packs include things like players, uniforms, arenas, player contracts, stat boosts, etc. You can purchase any range of packs, from the cheap ones (which give you low quality players) up to some super mega jumbo packs with rarer quality cards and a higher quantity. Some sales definitely help with your quest to develop a strong team. You can also acquire cards through the auction house if you find a good deal.

I personally don't care for that game mode, as it starts out really slowly and I despise having an awful team with random scrubs from the ECHL/AHL/lower tier European leagues. I'm much more of a Be a GM type of guy.

(Note: I don't have NHL 15, so some of this might be outdated. I'm using what I know from NHL 13 and limited use in NHL 14)

I do understand where you're coming from, but I don't have the patience to play the auction house for hours in a day.

Thanks for the explanation, sounds kinda fun. Is this something where you have to keep buying the new version every year to keep up? Or DLC?

i worded that poorly

you can get a full lineup of mid 80 overall players by just going to the auction house and buy now max = 650

that is one new player for every game you play with some extra to buy contracts or whatever

best thing to do is just use all your ****** starting players to play single player again great britain or japan or something for a few games to get some coins, build a couple decent lines and defensive pairings and buy an okay goalie and then just fill in the rest of the holes playing multiplayer if you are tired of single player

it is the only next-gen mode that isn't fundamentally broken. be a gm has absolutely Pejorative Slured sim AI which bugs the hell out of me so i can't really stand to play it. ranked online versus is fine, but gets boring to me because everyone uses the penguins, kings, or blackhawks every game

i love be a gm in nhl 14 it is so easy to build a great team. the lack of realism is super easy to exploit.

for instance, all you have to do is claim everyone off of waivers, because they send them to the minors automatically for some reason, so you get one free callup. instead of using the one free callup, you can just trade them to someone for future low round picks, which, once you get enough of them, can be traded for higher picks.

one time i claimed scott gomez of waivers and immediately traded him for a 3rd round pick twice in the same season.

my current roster:

Drouin (90) - Seguin (91) - Kuznetsov (87)
Benson (random draftee 87) - Bergeron (89) - Toffoli (86)
Dubinsky (84) - Jillson (random draftee 87) - Z. Phillips (82)
Pearson (79) - Jarnkrok (82) - Mantha (79)

Gardiner (90) - Ekblad (89)
Komarniski (random draftee 88) - Hamilton (86)
Honka (80) - Vatanen (86)

Dansk (86)
Kuemper (81)
(Just drafted a goalie first overall that has 5 yellow stars, first prospect I've ever had with 5 stars)

all i do is every offseason i pick the highest contract with one year left and trade it for the 1st overall pick along with other stuff. thats how ive gotten rid of barkov, j johnson, byfuglien, and van riemsdyk. ekblad, benson, jillson, and komarniski were all top five picks, plus i have another two first overall picks in the system (yes, i have had the #1 overall pick for five straight years plus one year i had 1 and 3). i might have to move seguin soon because i just signed him to a $10m deal that made me have to move lucic just to get hamilton signed (i moved lucic for two first round picks and a second).

my only unmoveables are bergeron because hes the captain of 3 straight stanley cup teams, ekblad because hes the best dman ive ever played with in this game and can score at will, vatanen because i can go coast to coast any time i want, toffoli because i love him, benson because he is 21 and scored 31 goals his rookie year (also has 99s for wrist shot power and accuracy), and jillson because hes 20 and has a 87. dansk has won two conn smythes but will eventually be traded a la niemi because of the 5 star goalie (whenever he stops being a 67 because he is 18 years old)

my current lineup on ultimate team (just started playing so it isnt very good):

landeskog - lindros (legend) - semin
skinner - datsyuk - ruutu
marchand - krejci - smith (dump all my boost cards on him so he is usually 93 overall)
foligno - dubinsky - horton

faulk - oel
markov - staal
niskanen - alzner

bobrovsky
smith

positions that badly need replacements: ruutu on second line is trash and needs to be replaced so i can put semin back on that line. bottom two lines could use upgrades to be more on par/better than current first second lines. defense pairings are all below average
