OT: CF Montréal: Potato Edition

He's actually trying to play the victim to explain why he's doing what he's doing when it's all because of how much of a failure he was at running this team.

He even indicates he'll likely sell the team soon and I can't wait for that day even it means the end of Montreal's run in MLS.

Doubtful. Renovating Stade Saputo will be costly and I don't know if it's worth it at this point unless you're in it for the long and even then because you don't own the surrounding land, the long term value is questionable.

I know people have talked about have a dual stadium with the Als but even then, I'd want to study the situation more before seeing if it's feasible. I know that they'd have to be careful with the turf/grass as the requirements are very different. But I will say that the change in schedule to a fall/winter one might actually help if it were a dual stadium.

I don't think there are a ton of rich local guys who are both willing to spend the 500 millions to buy both the team and the stadium, plus invest what's needed to develop the franchise mid to long term. Especially if it turns into a winter league in direct competition with the hockey season. It would have to be a George Gillett type of situation IMO, rich guy from outside who happens to REALLY love soccer.

When you have a media empire that will also profit from it, it makes sense to spend the money.

I don't see it in this case , especially with the Apple deal running until 2032. It would have to mostly be a live gate business for a long while. He's not spending that kind of money on soccer anyway.

Apparently Apple does have an out clause after year 5, which would be in two years, so the TV landscape could change then. It has 100% hurt the game and growth of MLS and is definitely hurting Canadian viewership.

TSN/RDS do get some games per year so there would be some ability to show the games on TVA but given the state of things right now, I don't think the money is significant.

The problem is, the team isn't worth the 450 million that Forbes says they're worth. It's only worth that to someone who's plan is to move the team somewhere south. Maybe they can do some magic with the numbers like they did with Coyotes but to our knowledge, the team isn't in traditional debt that they could prop the sale price up with.

How would they be able to profit right now with the Apple TV deal in place? What other ways could they profit?

Hard knocks/24CH type of stuff following the teams around. Plenty of exclusivities for their magazines or talk shows.

Just on top of my mind. Also, 5 years isn’t that long.

We're in year 3, so it's two years from now. Along with that, do you really feel that what you talk about is enough to justify the amount of money required to fix this project?

Also, I hope you don't think I'm picking on you. There are potential reasons that it might be good for PKP to buy it even without the TV rights that have connection to the Als and a new stadium but it's dicey.

On the surface, I don't buy the 20 million but like he said, if revenues are less across the board, which makes sense due to Apple TV especially and all the money they gave to Messi, it becomes more understandable.

The stuff about the investments, I dunno. I just find it hard to believe that he'd be willing to invest that money to begin with.

It's also misleading what he says about Stade Saputo. They own the building, RIO owns the land and leases it to the team, which means that they can decide whether to approve or not approve major renovations that impact the structure and value of the land.

Exactly. As much as the CF Montreal rebrand is weak, I don't get the undying passion about the Impact brand.
FWIW, a return to the impact brand might actually be a decent PR move right now, if done right. It could be the calculated first step of a slow Saputo babyface turn. It's a lot easier than spending actual money on the team, in any case.
