sorry to hear that Matt. I think you're smart to start looking, as that acquiring company sounds like trouble.
I've said it numerous times since I retired from IT (42 years in). IT is not the place to be looking for a job anymore. Between AI, machine learning and the generally lousy IT work environment, I would stay away from anything to do with coding, analysis, or anything that can be taught to a "robot". Data science/analytics or info security/auidt would be where I'd look in these times.
Im at 3 and a half months of trying to make a change and 0 interviews and recruiters are almost nonexistent.

Perhaps too many people have jobs? Isn't unemployment crazy low right now?

Hate to tell you but the unemployment rate is not an accurate measure since it doesn't include discouraged workers, marginally attached workers, or the long-term unemployed. There is no differentiation on part-time vs. full-time which is why you hear of so many people with two or three part-time jobs trying to make ends meet. And it doesn't include if those jobs are getting people to minimal standards of survival.

So yeah, 4% looks great but the there is evidence the actual rate is about 24% in the US.

Then add in the long-standing manipulation of job offers by companies that are trying to maintain stock price (hey look, we're hiring! we're great!), or trying to improve morale internally (hey, keep killing yourself for the company, help is coming, see this listing for a new hire that's been posted every three months for a year or two??), or are looking to go public. There are the ones that are done by companies with no intention of hiring externally but have to be offered by employment law or personnel contracts to external individuals first (hey, see this amazing listing for requirements that don't actually exist!) and are being "budgeted" to be not filled so the company doesn't have the expense for the posting until the new year.

Shit jobs w/ shit pay for the majority of Americans, stocks > people, corporate profit at the expense of a functional economy. Trickle down is working exactly as intended. Can't wait to see what the next gear is

Now they’re trying g to spin it as “polyemployment” and it being the new thing for people to do. Instead of calling it what it is. Shit wages so people need to work multiple jobs.

Nobody wants to work 2-3 jobs. Hell, nobody wants to work one job, but we have to.

I think a much better metric would be the percentage of people who are working age that make $50k+ per year and then $100k+ per year as opposed to the current way the unemployment rate is calculated.

Eh, $50k in Austin isn't the same as $50k in a lot of other places.

I agree with your idea but I would change it to % of people who make 100%, 150%, etc of "adjusted poverty level".

Absolutely.

$50k in Austin vs NYC vs SF vs Buffalo or Rochester are very different situations. Adding as much context as possible would be the best case scenario.

I was working at Sumitomo Rubber and am currently in the wait and see looking for a possible job with IT since I have a degree. Luckily the workers should be compensated heavily for the sudden shutdown. Luckily I was saving most of my money anyway so it's not like I'm in dire need.

If I don't transition someplace else before this fails, going to consider doing the freelance thing a bit. I hate job hunting oh so much.
