Reading all the narratives coming out surrounding Caitlin Clark getting bullied on the court has me slightly confused. Ive heard people blame race, say the other players are jealous and doing it out of resentment, that the opposing players should be kissing her feet for bringing attention + money to the sport (laughable), etc...
Maybe I'm a simple minded sports fan, but the way she's being treated is nothing new in sports. High profile rookies will be tested by veteran players. Maybe it's resentment, maybe it's to get a competitive advantage, etc...it's probably a mix of a lot of thing. The point is, I feel like people are hyper focusing on it because it's women's sports.
I personally believe it's the trials and tribulations a lot of young players go through. She's just the biggest star to come out of college, so she's getting it extra rough. The true crime here is her teammates don't have her back. Where's Semenko when you need him!?
Columbia, SC is women’s basketball land, so I hear about the sport all the time.
It’s a combination of a lot of factors.
She’s a rookie and she’s going to get rookie treatment. Clark is a flashy first pick who got a lot of media coverage in college. So players are going to test her.
Veterans who have been trying to bring the league exposure for years and could not don’t like her.
She plays a game that most women can’t play. She’s a girl version of Steph Curry. And she gets a ton of attention for it, and some players are resentful.
There’s probably a race aspect too for some players, but I don’t suspect it’s that big as there are and have been a lot of successful white players in the WNBA.
I suspect more of it is the Tim Tebow factor. Clark is viewed as squeaky clean and people naturally react to that, positively and negatively.
Dawn Staley loves Clark but admitted that she could never play at South Carolina because she’s too much of a pro style player who has the ball a lot. I’ve met Staley numerous times, and she’s a great person but very much a Nick Saban type of coach. She attracts great players and can coach/say what she wants. That leads to a lot of what I’d call “truth telling.” She’ll call a player out in a heartbeat.
If Staley loves Clark then I think the reactions will subside by next season.
Clark needs to spend an off-season working out and getting stronger.
