Raymond and Seider. Damn. The future is now. This is pretty cool.

Honest question, when is that last time the Wings had a 19-year-old on the roster?
Larkin, 2015
Ah yes. He came in fast, too. Must have been ages before him.

Just not used to it as a Wings fan, ha.

You also had both Rasmussen and Zadina as recently as the 18-19 season, and IIRC Zadina was a few days shy of 20 when he was eventually called up in 19-20.

But otherwise, yea... Super rare occurrence for Red Wings fans after Bryan Murray stopped coaching them. Between then and Larkin I think it's down to Dandenault, Fischer and Hudler?

Same goes for Raymond, most likely Raymond would have started in GR if it wasn't for the Vrana injury.

Raymond is slated to play on the first line with Larkin and Bertuzzi. Odds are he wasn’t even a consideration to be sent down considering his play.

hmm yeah it was

not sure why hockey reference has him at 20 for that year

IIRC, what they put for the roster list is what they were at the end of the season or something like that?

I just kind of remembered in the back of my head that Hudler was unusually young for the Red Wings when he had that weird stint in 03-04. Had to check the game logs to make sure.

Raymond started camp pretty good but he got less good as he went along. I'm very surprised he made it. It will be interesting to see if he can hang on beyond 9 games.

Yeah, hopefully he doesn’t get less gooder as the season goes on.

Just baffling to me veleno didn’t make it, he clearly was one of our best 9 forwards, and with Ryan not making the team that leaves someone like namestikov having a spot on the third line. What a joke, play the best players not just keep bums because you have them signed.

The way the Wings are structured, there's a clear top 6 and a clear bottom 6. I think if Raymond was going to make it, he would have to take a top6 role.

If Vrana wouldn't have been injured, then all of Larkin, Vrana, Bertuzzi, Suter and Fabbri would have been hard for Raymond to push down, so then it would have been a fight between Zadina and Raymond over the last top 6 spot.
If Raymond would have continued his play from the 3 first pre-season games to the last 3 pre-season games, they wouldn't have had a choice but to have him in the NHL. However due to the fact that his play got worse in those 3 last games I think that would have been enough to keep Zadina in the top 6 and send Raymond to GR.

Anyway, senseless to argue about, Vrana was hurt, and Raymond has secured a place in the first game, hope he can keep it over the entire season :)

Sorry...didn't mean to pile on. Was answering when I saw it. Didn't realize the hivemind had answered it another 20 times. My apologies ;)

ide say the brass outlook is if hes not going to get top 6 minutes and pp time its best for his development to be the 1C getting huge pp minutes in gr

I mean start taking away the best veterans and watch any prospect flounder as he continues to acclimate to a new level of play. This will be a season of turmoil for him certainly. New challenges at every turn. The one thing we don’t have to worry about is if Raymond can handle himself like a pro and take care of his responsibilities and have ownership of his play. Multiple years in the SHL should have instilled those habits, much like they did for Seider. I know Hakan Andersson has commented saying just about as much in regards to the Swedes or other Euro kids who get exposed to pro hockey. And God knows that Henkka preaches that message too (this comes from the heart, Henkka).

He might need to go down to GR, but he certainly proved early on his talent plays up. I’ll always remember when you said Raymond had no chance to make the roster and we should prepare for another year of Bobby Ryan. A fond memory indeed

Wonder if Veleno was sent down to avoid waivers, I thought he earned a spot. Maybe Yzerman is looking to trade a depth forward rather than losing one for nothing. Likely just wishful thinking and Veleno will be the go-to-guy in GR for now.

Yzerman’s track record is not to have a top 6 and a bottom 6. Look at his Tampa team in the final years. If anything he errs too much on scoring depth.

I think that’s why players like Erne, Rasmussen, Stephens fit his vision now. Dudes that are a handful to deal with, be it size, physicality, speed, tenaciousness. He absolutely could find a place for Raymond on a third line with Erne and Ras. He has that skill level that a lesser defensive matchup could be exploited and make Ras and Erne more dangerous than they normally are.

That's a stupid outlook for the brass to have. It's very unlikely he's ever going to be a top 6 center anyway.

I think if Rasmussen looks like he did last year at Center, he'll be moved to wing by Game 25.
At that point, Veleno comes in as a C.

If Veleno gets some starts because someone got injured and looks really good, I'm pretty sure Yzerman will make room for him, somehow.

I was thinking the same thing. With that said he is projected to be a skilled C so #1C ice time in GR might be better for his long term development.
