Probably some missed calls, but because it’s misleading, they need to remove that artificial strike zone box.
Agree 1000%

I absolutely HATE the strike zone box you see on TV. It adds nothing positive but only micro-scrutinizes an ump's misses.

Before that dumb box we were all able to judge balls and strikes just fine. broadcasters need to get rid of it. It's honestly not that far off the laser puck thing fox used in the 90s or whenever Lol.

I don't know how old most of the people are here, but I think most of us know the strike zone without the box, for years we learned what the strike zone is, why are they using it now?

put it this way. The only time they should have that box is when they have automated (non-human) strike and ball calls. Otherwise having the box is just asking for trouble.

who can i email about this? It really pisses me off.

Agree with both of you 1000%. I absolutely hate the box. Not to mention I find it is mis-calibrated.

Point remains that in relation to the box, the Jays got shafted on too many calls. It wasn't a level playing field.

Actually better than I thought
A couple of quick notes when looking up the data...

Davis Schneider had one bad call for (the ball bottom right) and two against (the two strikes above the zone) in that one AB. Alan Roden (lower ball to the right of the plate) is the only other call that went the Jays way.

That ridiculous strike to the right was pitch 1 to Bo in the 5th BTW.

That's why I like Umpire Scorecards so much. They use the box overlay, but make a red shape to show you what the umpire's strike zone would look like if he called it consistently.

Edit: for anyone wondering, when SN shows the simulated pitch and location, it is using Pitch F/X data (the same system as ABS challenge) and is 100% accurate based on the technical definition. This is the same data used by Umpire Auditor. It is also the box on the Umpire Scorecard overlay.

+2.04 runs is wild, but not surprising at all.
On 12 missed calls. Here's a run expectancy table I found. You can see that the impact of 1 ball or strike isn't normally that consequential (unless it is a blown call that leads to a walk/K)

There were a lot of bad calls that almost all benefited Boston, but what should have been strike three to Casas directly lead the walkoff win.

It wasn't the most egregious call based on the location, but it sure looked like an obvious strike. You can't just assume everything that followed would have happened the same way, but still... there's a really good chance that game goes to the 11th if the ump doesn't mess that one up.

They just said on Blair & Barker that thru the first 14 games, the Jays have had the best starting pitching, and the worst offense in terms of home runs.

They're last in HR, but they do enough other things well that the offense as a whole is roughly average (15th in wRC+, 17th in R/G).

They need to start hitting HR because they have the talent to be a lot better than this, but at least they're treading water.

Why not have an apparatus automatically make the ball and strike call. The plate ump can make the plays at the plate call, timeouts, balks etc.

What a weird way to parse things by being extremely broad and general in one aspect, but then incredibly narrowly focused in the other.
