Blue Jays GDT: Opening Day!

it’s one thing to not have a farm system it’s even more wild that we don’t even have a couple of cheap veterans that can step in. Like wtf has Atkins done over the past decade??? We have literally zero depth. One guy goes down and we gotta bring up a raw rookie. It’s crazy
Yeah, and it's not a new issue. When Manoah went down early last year they literally had nobody when he was sent down, they had to do bullpen days every 5th start!

No they said it will be some minor league guy i forget his name. will be his MLB debut. That's our depth of starting pitching lol. a 40 year old goes down with a predictable injury and the next guy will be a fresh rookie. Way to go Shatkins.
Most teams go out of their way to have two or three guys that can step in and start a game, from AAA. I just find it incredible we can't do that.

Are rookies incapable of stepping in and starting a game? Plus they have a vet (Eric Lauer) down in the AAA rotation too.

They’re capable but even a half decent run organization usually don’t go to a rookie as their first option. It goes to show how weak the overall depth situation is

Who’s everybody taking about coming up and making their debut? I haven’t seen this news.
You’re right though, there’s Lauer and Bash down at AAA, and Kloff when he gets healthy.
Nice for depth that Nance accepted his AAA assignment.

You'd be surprised. It's a lot more effective for a team to use a rookie with options than to sign a vet FA that would even be interested in being a AAA player, let alone potentially waived after a few starts in the majors.

Plus this idea of a "rookie" leaves so much context out of the equation. Who is the rookie? I'd rather have a rookie with potential called up than a vet who's cooked.

I'm not sure either but even if they called up Bash or Schultz, who are 27/28 year old rookies, it wouldn't necessarily be terrible choices considering their performances last year as swingmen in AAA. Maybe we're talking about Fluharty joining the BP? A rookie who probably should've joined the opening day roster over Lovelady to begin with. I just don't understand why being a rookie insinuates a lack of ability.

The first time I've ever made a negative comment about Heineman and the guy hits his first HR since 2019 in his next AB.

Anyhow, to get a split out of this series after the way the opener went is a win. What a shame the way the game yesterday was squandered, though.
Baltimore good team though

Vladdy talk with your bat not with your mouth. The mouth is working
Yea he's been talkin for a few years... remember "That was the trailer, this is the movie"?

4 games no homers. Homers win games. So far he's hit 3 singles and 1 double.

Him and Santander will get it going with the power and this team will go a on a roll. 2-2 with those guys really not doing much? I will take it. Once they get going, this team will be good.

Yeah, he already makes the most out of all first basemen, they showed a graphic. He wants to make $15m per year more than the next guy.
Yea it's an automatic mistake for us. It's honestly much better for us to trade him for as big a return as possible.

Alternatively: he keeps playing like this and drives his price into the ground.

Nobody wants a first baseman than can only hit singles and doubles. Obviously only 4 games in though.

From a marketing and organizational culture aspect trading him could also be detrimental. You lose the most well-known player on the team, a "Canadian" who has mentioned his desire to stay, even if it's perceived as pandering to the fanbase. Players may not want to sign here anymore as they aren't able to extend their most coveted homegrown players (Bo would likely leave as well). We've already seen them struggle to attract free agents recently finishing as runner ups on many occasions, and that could be further impacted.

Value-wise you're probably not getting a coup for him either considering he's pricing himself towards a very limited group of teams that would be interested in acquiring him for the possibility of extending him. Any other team looking at him as a rental will look at what a full year Soto (who is better) got and go from there.

Bichette had a great series, but I wanted a homer mixed in there. But he is not going to hit a home run every series either. Vladdy and Tony have to heat up too.

Vladdy was pretty bloody unlucky in that Baltimore series. His EV was 103.3 and hard-hit % was 90% which is insane even for him (last year EV was 93.8 and hard-hit was 55%). He was smoking balls but several were right at fielders and he *just* missed on a couple deep fly balls.

If he keeps doing what he was doing the XBH will start coming in a hurry.
