The hilarious and annoying thing about an NYR drop off is that the Islanders probably just take their spot since the Atlantic is so inept.

He's still a good executive but, hasn't had the scouting and player development backbone/player pipeline since Conte. Hudson Phashing and Oliver Whalstrom just don't move the needle and you can't spent like Steve Cohen. He has too much pride and integrity to go full roster purge with his time in Toronto being the exception. They have a solid core of vets that work and play with some decent structure. Keeps them hanging around for sure.

I think the reason that things were different in Toronto, and I've been saying this since he was currently with Toronto, I don't think he had the power in Toronto that he had with us or the Islanders. Maybe he wasn't a full-on figurehead there like he would have been had he stayed on with us under Shero, but he was definitely second in command to Shanny and had to answer to him, which the GM in most places in second in command to the POHOPS and does answer to them. Unless they just so happen to have both roles or that particular organization doesn't have an official POHOPS. In that case the GM only answers to the owners.
But Lou never had anyone above him here, other than the owners. He was named POHOPS and GM at the same time if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure he never had a guy above him for the Islanders in the actual hockey department either.
They did adopt some of Lou's policies in Toronto, like no facial hair, team media flies public commercial airlines and not team charter, no twitter (I think?), etc. But in the 38 years that Lou has been a GM in the NHL, he would not have been behind a blow up/tank job/whatever in 35 of those years. Only the 3 years he was with the Leafs.
I don't believe he would have done that on his own call. Shanny gave him the rundown on arrival and told him what was up and Lou had to agree with it or stay with us working a ceremonial role until another team called.

If you noticed, Lou didn't bring in any of his buddies and former players/coaches from Jersey to Toronto like he's done since he got to the Islanders.
He's brought in everybody to the Islanders from equipment managers to scouts to other front office people and coaches.
You didn't see Conte working for Toronto while Lou was there. He was a scout for Vegas. But now he's working as a ''Special assignment scout'' for the Islanders since Lou's second year there.
You didn't see him bringing in John MacLean and family into Toronto like he did to Long Island. He's brought in as many guys from Jersey to the Islanders as we used to laugh at Shero and even Fitz for doing with bringing Pittsburgh guys over to here. He even signed guys like Palmieri who wasn't even here under him. And Tommy Albelin is even back coaching in the NHL again with the Islanders. I'm sure Stevens was offered a role, probably multiple times but declined. Sarge would probably be over there if he wasn't here. Even Chris Terreri has been over there for years now, and Rick Kowalsky is too. But Terreri was actually hired a year before Lou. I wonder if Chris brought Terreri in there when he came in a year before Lou or if he just got that spot with no prior connections. He was an Islander as a player for a half a minute before his career ended.
I think maybe the one guy or one of the very few guys that he did bring with him upon arrival in Toronto was Jacques Lemaire as a special assignment coach. And he immediately followed him right over to the Islanders in the same role where he still is today. Jacques has been attached to Lou's hip as a special assignment coach since he retired from head coaching here the second time. I think a few of us could have used some grief counseling after the Avs loss. Particularly because of the constant losses to Wedgewood for me. I was already having nightmares hours before I fell asleep that Blackwood would be traded to Toronto the next day and we'd have to play him tonight.
I got the Blackwood traded part right, but luckily to the team that had just left town, who we don't have to play until the end of February!

Hynes hasn’t figured out anything. The Wild have devils taylor hall Mvp season written all over them. That is not a presidents trophy winning roster. They’ll fall back down to earth and probably won’t be a real threat come playoff time.

The Norris race this year between Makar and Quinn is going to be like the 2012 AL MVP race between Mike Trout and Miggy Cabrera. By the analytics, it's Quinn and it's not actually all that close. But by the counting stats, Makar has the edge.
It's this, people. His two best years- arguably his only two good years- as coach was when he had a Hart Trophy year from Taylor Hall in NJ, and a Norris-caliber season from Roman Josi in Nashville. And Preds fans hate him as much as we do... possibly more, actually, because he didn't uncover a Bratt or a Coleman down there and waived Tolvanen.

Yea Makar is amazing, but his stats without MacKinnon are not great. If Quinn keeps this up, he should win.
