Not quite as one dimensional as a Jay Caulfield-esque Goon, but the “crease clearing defenseman” was the counterpart to the Tim Kerr, “net front presence”.
Dana Murzyn was a text book example of a player whose main job was to cross-check guys in the small of the back.

Are we not counting enforcers?

Too many of those.

Not an enforcer but could Steve Webb do anything besides throw devastating bodychecks and lose every fight?

Tim Kerr was really good though. If not for injuries, you’re maybe talking about a Hall of Famer, even if he was one dimensional. It worked out for Dave Andreychuk.

I don’t remember much about Murzyn but he seemed like a solid plug on the third pair.

Dan Girardi...Blocking shots and getting in the lane.

Everything else about his game was pretty poor or below average from a skill standpoint, skating, passing/puck moving, offensive ability, hockey sense, etc.

But was a pretty good player for a bit and had a hell of a career for someone of his raw skill and ability.
Forgot about him but that is bang on assessment of him.

It's not the best answer because he's overall very talented, but based on effort level and inconsistency, I'm not sure Laine would even still be in the league if he didn't have what I consider to be a top 5 wrist/snap shot in NHL history.

He can be invisible all game but then give a tiny flick of the wrist from the top of the circle and send a laser beam top cheese.

He's very skilled but Laine is a top 6 winger in the NHL or nothing at all and it's his shot keeping him as a top 6 winger.

Wasn't Rico Fata another guy who was only good at skating fast?
I was trying to think of his name, bingo!

Stamkos deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as any and all all-time players when it comes to one timers. Otherwise he is quite the prize pony. He is alright and good at other stuff but my God is he freaking elite the big blast
He is at the top, but ahead of him are Ovie and Hull

Of current players, Hoffman and Victor Olofsson can shoot the emblem off the puck but that's about it.

Girardi was the new Craig Ludwig!

Brandon Bollig.

Expert fist-bumper as the team left the ice.

Useless at everything else.

Gaston.....Gingras!!!! His claim to fame was an absolute howitzer that seemed to miss the net (especially over the net) every time. As an aside, he still does a lot of coaching with youth in Montreal, the absolute nicest guy. He always fires one of those howitzers at the really young goalies but this time miss on purpose, very funny.

Erik Christensen- God among kittens in the shootout, couldn't do a goddamn other thing to save his life.
Tyler Kennedy- Wrap around circle to the top of the circle, rip top shelf snap/wrist shot, sometimes he shoots it into the logo, misses wide by 15 feet, or shoots it into the stands.
Brendon Tanev- Skate really fast, hit everything draw penalties, be next to useless otherwise, but really fun to watch doing so.
Jan Ruutu- Block shots and sometimes shoot the puck pretty hard or just get hurt alot.

He was my pick too but I think he was a little better than he's given credit for in his very short peak, his body just fell apart so quickly

I remember my Canucks playing the Oilers in the late 2000s with Mathieu Garon in net.

He wasn't a great goaltender overall, but he was insanely flexible. Just absolutely elastic legs. He'd bust out the full-splits at least one per game.

The Leafs have a few players that are amazing at disappearing in the playoffs.

When people say faceoff specialists, the guys they refer to are generally still solid defensively and decent energy players.

I would submit - Zenon Konopka as a *true* faceoff specialist. As in, he would take the faceoff and then immediately change and/or fight.
