Once again, skidding into the playoffs...

Part of me wants to believe that Berube has this team playing at 80% intentionally, to sandbag the competition into thinking the Leafs are going to be an easy out. The other part of me thinks that Berube is not a good coach and done nothing to correct this teams past poor behaviours , except implement a system the makes us score less and gives up a shit load of shots on goal. Has this team already peaked?

It’s hard because the run and gun system doesn’t work either. These guys just need to be a bit more aggressive on the forecheck really. Be the first man on the puck and get it back

Their forwards are far more comfortable playing run-and-gun compared to this style.

Under this setup, you can tell it doesn't always come naturally to them.

And when you eventually go up against a team like Florida who lives and breathes that style, you end up getting really lopsided games like we saw last night, and like we've seen from the Leafs on several occasions this season when going up against teams willing to be patient and grind and commit to that style.

At no point this season has Matthews looked comfortable in this style. It's a testament to his ability as a player that he's still putting up 70+ points, but it really feels like you're handcuffing the one thing your team is really good at.

Scott Arniel on the Avs:

“We saw a Stanley Cup champion team…they lost to Seattle the next year. We saw a team that was very, very upset…We had finished the year really well and we went in there, I don't know if you’d call us the favourites. But we went against Colorado and we saw their experience. We saw their ability to play to the moment. We saw Nate McKinnon dumping pucks in. We saw third- and fourth-line players become huge factors for their group. There are elite players doing things that maybe they don't always do for 82 games."

For the past 8 years how many of those points have applied to the Leafs? I'd say none (outside of some decent bottom 6 contributions early on - pre-extension AM, Mitch & Willie - that are not surprisingly non-existent now).

Skidding ... I watched the game tonight and all I can say is ... yup.
One game dude… one damn game. They were 8-1-1 in their previous 10…. God you people are impossible…. You do realize over an 82 game schedule teams are just not going to have it some nights. Hey guys we’re skidding because we lost 3-1 after winning 4 in a row. GTFOH

You seem upset. Do try to calm down, it's only hockey after all. Winning is great but we haven't been playing well lately, that's should be apparent to anyone watching the games and last night was particularly bad. The last game against Florida sure we won, but we played badly that game as well. If the truth hurts your feelings, not much I can do about that.

Then you have to change the players I guess because run and gun wont win in the playoffs. To me I don’t see it as a testament to Matthews or any of our guys. It’s frustrating that they are un willing to adapt. We don’t have the mobility on the back end to play run and gun. One thing that really stood out to me about Florida’s game is, all their dmen can skate and make a great first pass. Their breakouts were tic-tac-toe perfect every time. Toronto’s d is handling grenades.

... Then you realize the players who have done a pretty good job of adapting are also the players the fanbase wants to get rid of... So we can double down on Matthews in this style.

Of the Leafs' most important 5 players, the two who look like they don't want to have anything to do with this system are Matthews and Reilly. And they're both signed long term with NMC'es...

I seem upset…lol I’m just pointing out how rediculous you sound. We’re the only fanbase that complains over a 8-1–1 run. We call that a skid. GTFOH

Calm down. There's nothing wrong with staying objective, win or lose. Some of those games we won, we didn't play well, simple as that.

Also, where are you getting this 8-1-1 stuff from. I'm a Leaf fan, not sure what team you're talking about.

Leafs with a 9-2-1 record in their past dozen games - - is that skidding bleakly or bleak skidding?
In our last 9 games, we lost to two teams that are 30th and 32th in the overall standings, we got humiliated by Florida last night and we got badly outplayed in our win over Florida last week. Call it what you like but if you think that level of play is good enough to go deep in the playoffs, you're wrong.

We're going to have be better, much better. Period.

I think there is a middle ground. It's never as good as it looks, and it's never as bad as it looks. Like I keep saying, the leafs will benefit from the fact that their opponents have gotten weaker. After round 1, it won't be easy, but I think this Leafs team is good enough to reach the Cup final based on the competition in the Eastern conference.

Not winning a Cup or even making the final in 58 years will do that.

Oh, and this franchise has been such a failure that they've only managed the relatively minor goal of winning their own division twice in that time, the most recent was a made-up division during Covid.

And now they have this team stocked with highly-paid superstars (4 of them) and yet they've managed one series win in 8 years including the complete humiliation of blowing a 3-1 series lead to the Canadiens and they've now blown 4 straight series against the hated Bruins, 3 of which they had a 3rd period lead in game 7.

They mortgaged their future by trading away picks & prospects and have literally nothing to show for it. And then they go to Florida for a very important game - and their first real tough test lately - against a team they quite possibly will have to defeat just to get out of their division and they looked like boys playing against men. Completely dominated. And those very rich stars? All but invisible. Again.

So yeah, frustration and impatience are justifiably a little high in Maple Leafs Land, are you seriously new here? I'd suggest to you if you were to take any major sports city and put their fans through the same thing - 58 years of futility - they'd come off as pretty toxic too.

I understand being frustrated and impatient but it is a little over the top here. We have threads made about how we're skidding into the playoffs when they have gone 8-1-1 in there last 10 games. You say they lost there first tough test excuse me didn't we just beat that same team a week ago but I guess that doesn't matter when you want to be negative all the time. Listen nobody gets more upset and pissed off than me when they lose in the playoffs but that doesn't mean I have to be negative all the time I would rather cheer for my favorite team . In addition don't patronize me about am I new here I am old enough to have seen them win their last cup that's how long I have been a fan I am willing to bet a lot longer than you.

That's pretty much always the case.

Anything's possible, but it's hard to be too optimistic about beating Florida in a 7 games series. Anyway, huge win last night to our chances of avoiding then in the 1st round look good so let's start there. This team should be big favorites to win the 1st round, but then that was the case against Florida 2 years ago and MTL before that so ... don't get overconfident would be my advice.

I know someone posted this but it isn't true. Watch the games, and don't believe everything you read.

I watch every game and don't tell me what to do
You write this lengthy post berating me, and you don't even have your facts straight. Someone posted this 8-1-1 nonsense a few posts ago, you repeated the lie so telling you not to believe everything you read seemed reasonable. I was just trying to be helpful so that you don't make a fool of yourself again.

Whether the exact record is factual or not is really irrelevant the fact is they have a very good record coming down the stretch and are once again a 100 point team they are not in fact "skidding" into the playoffs. You seem to be ignoring that fact. Also don't worry sunshine I don't need your help with anything.

We are 7-2-1 in our last 10. Not a big difference, but I guess big enough to make some folks shit their pants in frustration and anger. Which is the most wins in the last 10 games of any Atlantic Division team not named Buffalo. Of the Atlantic Division playoff teams, if the playoffs started today, we'd have the best record from the last 10 games...if we're skidding into the playoffs, it seems like a lot of teams are, and skidding more so.

They are addicted to being outraged and upset by how the Leafs are playing. When they play well, they will say "the regular season doesn't matter, cup or bust"; then when they play poorly during the regular season they melt down.

It doesn't matter what our actual record is, they'll find something to whine about. There's lots to complain about when it comes to the Leafs, but for some people this is a lifestyle and they've chosen it so they can constantly be mad about something...and if you're not constantly about to burst a blood vessel over it, well you're just a bad fan or dumb or something.
