Don't post much, but here are my thoughts of the game:
1) The US did not choke in my opinion. Did they play their, best game? No, but I don't think they choked. Canada was the better team coming into the game (on paper) and the better team today. They reminded me of the pre-lockout NJ Devils. It was extremely frustrating to watch, but hats off to them. They played better than the US.
2) Blaming Patrick Kane for the United States offensive woes is wrong. Was he an effective player today? No. Was he effective this entire tournament? Not really. But to me, he is not the type of person that you build your offense around. The US doesn't really have much of a choice, as he is their most skilled player. But in a tournament like this, he is a complimentary player, albeit an extremly talented one. Chicago is built around Jonathan Toews, not Patrick Kane, and you saw why this tournament.
3) To me, when I look at the teams and the types of players that the US and Canada develop, two things really stick out to me. The first is that the centers that Canada produce are far superior to those that the United States produce. Look at Canada's center depth, than look at the United States' center depth. Crosby, Toews, Getzlaf, Duchene (and injured Tavares) vs. Kesler, Backes, Pavelski, Stastny (and scratched Stepan). Canada's center depth is head and shoulders above that of the US. Not a single US center would make Canada over the centers listed. Canadas centers also make other players they play with better. Hell, Chris Kunitz was basically Sidney Crosby's second carry on bag to Sochi.
4) The other aspect that Canada is doing better at pumping out is elite level defenseman. Ryan McDonagh and Ryan Suter might be able to crack team Canada, or are at least on par with most of the Canadian defenseman. After that, the US defense has a significant drop off in talent. The Canadians smoothered the US defensively today. The US had 0 sustained forecheck and pressure. Like I said, tough to watch as a US fan.
5) As for goaltenders, the US does a great job. How bad would the US have lost to day if not for Quick? He played lightsout. Goaltending like the US has will give them a chance to win any game, as great goaltending is the great equalizer. In the areas listed above, the United States is getting much better. They need to keep producing defenseman like Suter and McDonagh. I'm excited for the future of US hockey.
6) Lastly, people ripping Bylsma I don't get. He is a great coach. He can coach my team any time.
All that said, time to drown my sorrows with some adult beverages tonight. Cheers guys.
