RB- Ok the reporters only think it's a good idea because they can he drunk.

How about the agents? Are they philanthropies?

When the agents thinks more long term than Daly and co someone is making a misstake. Tremendous exposure on the World Stage infront a viewing close to a billion vs 2.5 days per year were the league is put in hold. I get that the die hard fans are pissed who works hard and will miss the games. I can't watch the QF or SF either. I couldn't watch much in Vancouver. But 82 games will be played. A week from now I want think about it. Hank blowing his knee would suck, Leetch breaking his leg sucked too. Did it in NY during the season. What is the diffrence?

The NHL would be stupid not to go to the Olympics again.

The Olympics grow the game in the states and the NHL can't afford to be lazy about doing that. I can't tell you how many people I know who weren't interested in hockey at all until a few days ago. Iv'e heard something like "I don't usually watch hockey but that US/Russia game was incredible" more than a dozen times. People who can't even name the NHL team in St. Louis know who TJ Oshie is now and ask what team he's on, how old he is, how he's done in the past. That's a big deal for the NHL. If they're smart they'll realize that. However, I've seen very little to lead me to the conclusion that the league is smart.

As for the NHL organizing something somewhat similar themselves, they're terrible at event production. Always picking awful musical acts and other cringe inducing setups. The Olympics are the olympics. They're a time honored tradition across the entire world. It's an event where, for the most part, people put aside their differences in order to engage in solid competition. There is literally nothing the NHL can do to make whatever BS event they want all the money from live up to that. Further, even if there was something they could do, they'd likely fail at it and end up with the Backstreet Boys playing some tournament nobody has ever heard of and nobody who doesn't already watch the NHL cares about. The Olympics has history that cannot be duplicated, especially in ice hockey, and especially in the states, where the NHL should be concerned with growing the game. Yeah, miracle was a long time ago and many of those people are already fans, but apparently it still has value, even to people who were too young to see it. Nobody cared when the US beat anybody else, but everyone and their mother can recap the Russia game suddenly.

Plus, I'd imagine that if US, Russia or Canada win gold, those players next tournament aren't going to be too happy about not defending their title so that the NHL can make a few more dollars. The fact that they've traveled across the world to play in an event that has nothing to do with the pay should be proof of the importance of representing their nation in this specific event.

Lastly, it's a smack in the face to the Olympics for the NHL to even pull these threats. The NHL is in no position to take this tone with such a huge event. Obviously, I'm a big fan of the product the league puts out more often than not, but it's far from a well oiled machine, and it's far from being as popular as it can be. The Olympics are, have been, and will be, bigger than the NHL and more important than the NHL to almost everyone aside from a minority of hardcore NHL fans and the guys in the boardrooms who are suddenly calling for their piece of this pie. After the way they acted last year in particular, I'd rather see them go hungry and see all of us continue to watch incredible Olympic hockey. This league has boned the fans for some pocket change enough already. At least then they were ruining their own product. I don't think they should try to ruin the Olympics for the same reasons. Frankly, I think it's disgusting that they're even considering it.

One day they will let woman's hockey check. I hope at least. Since the last Olympics it's gotten faster and stronger. I love it as an ex-(woman's ice hockey) player.

i do like the olympic sized hockey rinks. their is a lot more skating room and more breakaways ive noticed... i wish their was a way for the NHL to use these rinks during the NHL season.

I don't think the difference between a fluke accident getting out of a cab, and a short tournament where everyone pushes themselves in to overdrive has to be pointed out.

Yes, accidents can happen at any time. Putting the players in to a position where the risk of accidents is elevated is not the same as just walking around the streets of New York.

I personally do not care one way or the other. I understand from the perspective of a European not wanting to see it go to a World Cup every summer considering the difficulty of getting coverage, and time difference, but it is not like the Olympics would go away, and men's hockey would still be an epic tournament every 4 years despite not having the NHL talent there.

There are good arguments on both sides, but ultimately if the best argument provided from your perspective is "it will grow the sport more in Europe" you are going to lose out because the NHL owners and NHLPA do not care about growing the sport in Europe as much as growing it in the NA where the game is predominantly played, and aired.

Lack of money. It needs to change if the game is going to become more competitive, the pro's in other countries can't afford to play. A pro league that could pay it's player enough to get by would swallow at least 10-15 players from the top 5 nations and even the field. As is the best Swedes and Finnish players retire when they are 20-25.

Hitting in women's hockey is problematic, everyone think they should be allowed to hit, but the level of play is just darn uneven. They fear the players health if they allowed hitting. The best players are so much stronger and faster than the below avg players who are amature like. They could hurt them at will.

I would say it is because they are just not competitive enough as of right now. A High School hockey team beat team USA in a friendly game. Maybe it was just one game, and maybe it doesn't mean much, but between the lack of physicality, and the lack of a higher compete level I am going to say that there just isn't enough to keep people interested in a WHL.

If New York got a team, or even if we got one local here in Pennsylvania at the new PPL Center where the Phantoms will play, I would probably follow it, but I am an exception to the rule.

I'd argue that the Olympics grow the game and sport in NA more than an NHL organized tournament would. I think it's extremely likely that such a tournament would cater almost exclusively to people who are already rabid NHL fans, while the Olympics reach out to others due to their coverage in mass media, and the historical clout that the games have established over decades, both of which likely reinforce and amplify one another.

Ail- The hockey tournament would not be epic, believe me. Spengler cup on the big stage, people would laugh at it. Would kill hockey no doubt.

The world has changed, 30 years ago you could sell the amateurs and Soviet angle, now it would be a complete phony tournamnent. You have no clue what you are asking for.

If you make it a junior tournament only 3-4 nations can compete, and it kills it even more. The level of play is much more uneven among juniors.

An injury is an injury. Why does it matter where it happens? Why is that so relevant?

The NHL can shut down for years when negotiating CBAs but can't shut down for 50 hrs per year on avg to participate in the OGs.

Kesler is a bit banged up, while Hank Sedin gets to rest for 18 straight days without missing a single game. Who reports that?

I just read the wiki for the CWHL and the players don't get paid but all travel, equipment are paid for. Also the Toronto team is sponsored by the Maple Leafs. It's getting there.

That makes sense about the hitting and I guess that's why they let USA and Canada kill each other in the Olympics.

I don't necessarily disagree with this, I just feel that if the best argument for the Europeans is "grow the sport here" the NHL doesn't care unless it will also grow it more in NA. Which may be the case.

There's a Boston team in the CWHL. They play at the Veterans Memorial rink. A few or six hours away...

I'm not asking for anything. Again, I do not care what they do with international hockey. I am an NHL fan first and foremost, and the NHL is growing itself through other means. Yes, international play helps the sport grow, but it is not the exclusive way the NHL grows itself. Therefore, to me, what they do internationally is largely irrelevant. I do agree the Olympics wouldn't be as good (to most) as it would having the NHL players available, but it would still be entertaining. (to most)

An injury is an injury, where it happens doesn't matter. That's not what am I saying though. What I am saying is that sending the players off to a short tournament where they give it 200% every game, is increasing the risk of injury, perhaps unnecessarily. Where do you think a player is more likely to be hurt, walking around the streets at home, or at the Olympics? I'm going to say at the Olympics, personally. Any time a player is playing what equates to playoff hockey the risk on injury is going to go up. How much? I don't know and you probably can't quantify that, but I am willing to say that there is an increase of injury.

Who is at more risk of injury, me who walks every couple of days on a paved path through the woods as a means of exercise, or the guy playing physical contact hockey a couple of days a week? You are always going to be at a greater risk of injury playing hockey, than you are not.

Meh, too far and not representing something I have an attachment to for it to be worth my investment of time and emotions.

I agree. I think the response to these games so far has been very encouraging in the the US at least. Lots of media coverage of the team, and just from my personal experiences, it seems like I've come across plenty of people who are suddenly very interested. I'm sure many of them won't become regular NHL fans, but I'd bet that a few do. You can tell when someone is really starting to get into the game.

I feel you. I should've put :sarcasm:, haha

This Can vs Swiss game, Pierre just said they need to change the ref situation with the woman. "It's too fast now". He wants 2 refs instead of one. This game is pretty nasty right now.

We just have to get home

Hope USA losses

I'm done with this ****

I like olympic hockey but if someone gets hurt i swear to god ill flip out

end it

usa, norway, canada, sweden. hope they all lose.

Yeah, I'm sure some of you will just find it hysterical if some of our guys get hurt. Opens it up for the hysterical jokes ya'll always make about it.

Like theres something funny about losing Nash to a concussion and not knowing at the time if he'd ever play again.

And how is this any different from him playing in the NHL?

It isn't. I'm not against NHL players playing in the olympics, it just makes me very nervous.

Just want to get home unscathed but I have a bad feeling we're gunna get nipped. Maybe only one injury but it'll still kill the team.
