Recalled/Assigned: Oliver Kapanen Will Be Assigned to Laval

I'm not seeing the offense so far with Kapanen.

I'll admit I'm not familiar with him so much, didn't read his scouting reports and stuff, but outside of skating, I haven't seen anything special.

So far he kind of reminds me of Newhook, but with better positioning defensively.

Not sold.

To be honest I have not seen it either. My faith in him comes from his excellent production in the SEL. I'm hoping his offense eneeges as he gets more comfortable on North American ice, my understanding is that the skill level in the AHL is a little higher than in the SEL.

Newhook's problem is his atrocious defensive game and faceoffs. If Newhook would be a good defensive player winning 50+ % of his faceoffs he'd be a very useful 3rd line center who could help on a 2nd line in case of injuries.

Kapanen will always have the advatage to be a more complete player. Even if he becomes a 30 points player at the NHL level he'll likely have a career. Roy can't afford to not be a 50+ points guy which he is unlikely to become.
I wonder what's going on in Roy's mind.

He must be wondering where he's traded to or thinking about heading overseas to play as there is no room for his type of play in Montreal.

I like to think that if it was me, if be thinking:

"I'm close, but I need to take intensive power skating lessons this semester, build strength, and take pilates/yoga to prevent injury."

But maybe he's thinking.

"I produced more points than Armia/Pezzetta so they're going to give me a spot and I'm going to be rich. Time to celebrate with beer !"

Something about him makes me think must trade before his stock drops to zero. Nothing about him stands out to me on NA ice. With Lehkonen at least you can see that Gallagher esque compete right off the bat and his willingness to get pucks on net.

As someone that has played, even in minor hockey, IF you really are honest with your game, you will see where works needs to be done and take measures to improve them and that doesn't stop ever, at least not for the ones with the determination to do their best to improve, and then you have some that just don't. Seen him play in junior and he hasn't really changed. He could get away as is in minors but not at a professional level.

But shouldn't somebody be telling him these obvious things?

And did Roy not improve a lot in D+2 abd D+3 but not D+4?

Just curious, what were your strengths and weaknesses as a player?

As a player, you know already and others will chime in with input. I would say that most players know their shortcoming, if the don't realize it on their own, that's a problem. He improved but not significantly from what I've seen anyways.

My issues were playing the wrong position for my size in the era where small skating defense were not drafted, todays hockey, Id' get drafted. Thankfully other leagues existed for those types and still exist today.

Kapanen played SHL. Kapanen played NHL. Japanese played AHL. All this. In the same season. That's too much hockey. In a normal world he'd be in holidays and pre season.

Roy is probably done in Hughes eyes.

I was a bit schocked to see him give up on plays twice. Both of those times were when i saw the high cameras where the entire ice was ahown. There was a breakaway by two opposing players. Mailioux stopped one but the following player scored. Roy could of chased the second player who was a step away from their blueline. Instead he looks like he's going to take off but then decides not to bother and takes a leisurly skate back.

Basically gave up on the play...and the Habs are going to give up on his career here.

BTW...he was called up after that game and went nowhere fast. Right now in the playoffs, he's invisible. Not much hockey left to prove otherwise. I'm sure he's going to be a great player...in the Swiss league.

I fully agree with this.

Is Kapanen AHL eligible? His career is coming at the cross roads. He's got the talent but he needs to play in the AHL and be within close up vision of Hughes and Marty.

He's 6'2" and 200 pounds on a high tempo aggressive team. He needs to uptempo his game in order to catch eyeballs and make himself relevant. Showing a "mature" game is not ehough. Showing a "steady, skilled" game is not enough either. I thought he did that in game 3, but he wasn't standing out as a playoff player...

Just my two cents...

I tend to agree. I do like the energy and tempo he has but he's on the soft side. I value having an asset like this (middle 6f type) but I do cringe when fans pencil him in as a center solution. He's more like a cheap version of Ehlers. Guys who can play center as insurance if there is a injury.

Maybe Newhook becomes more mature and can handle a center role when he is 27-32 range. But today, nobody should be considering him as a full time center. It's just flawed.

I see some fans say sign Ehlers this summer. Sure... if we do, Newhook has to be traded. No way we should be icing a soft/skilled roster. We need to be careful with it.

Skating is his biggest weakness......I am not sure how you think that is a strength????
